Italki app is awful. I lost time, money and mood. I deleted from this platform.
1. Italki didn't have refund money on Credit Card
2. Irresponsible teachers. Some theachers are just waiting for the time to get the money
3. Support responds after 3 days.
4. Unfriendly design

This site used to be easy to use. Now it’s the opposite. The low star is for not listening to users who have told them time and again the new version of the site sucks. They act like they hate the people they pretend to serve because they do not listen to us. And they take huge service fees!
Customer service: used to be great but is getting poor. Takes longer and people don’t actually read what you wrote. However some of the complaints people are making here about teachers show they don’t actually know how to use the site and I’m glad then customer service advocates for both sides.
Everything else: Compared to having to go to a language school it’s excellent.

I've been italki user for the last 4 years. It used to be the great place for learning languages. But it's not so pleasant place to be there anymore.
I purchased italki credits with an intention to send italki gift cart to my friend for his birthday like I did in the past year, but when I come to the italki form for the gift card I discover that I can't do it. The form demands from me to buy more credits even though I have enough credits on my account. So I stack with credits on my account and italki demands more money from me. I contacted the support who plays for time and doesn't do anything to help me. I suggested a few options how to solve this, so far no response. Meanwhile the birthday of my friend is passed and I couldn't purchase another gift for my friend.
In addition, my second teacher recently left italki in the middle of the course due to the new unfair policy of italki. It's look like the best teachers are leaving italki.
Be careful and think twice before you put any money on italki, because you won't see your money if something's gone wrong.

I don't trust feedbacks on Italki anymore. We prepaid 4 classes of Russian for my husband with a tutor Natasha from Ukraine, Kyiv.
5 star tutor, ideal feedbacks. And here's our own experience which I believe have to be shared in order to prevent waste of time and money of other people.
First lesson started with her coming online on Skype late, saying that she just got up and asking for another half of an hour delay "to have morning coffee".
Second lesson was ignored by her. She just didn't come online. And when she finally appeared on Skype, she got surprised how it happened we didn't know that it was the day of starting of another school year for her daughter, and obviously she has been there, at her daughter's school. Informing us about change of her plans in advance was not even in her consideration. For some, known only to her reason, she decided we have to be able to read her mind.
During second lesson my husband mentioned to her we have friends who want their kids to speak English, so she started to promote herself as an English teacher and tried to convince my husband to recommend her to our friends. Probably she really believes she leaves enough positive impression about herself as a tutor.
Before having a third lesson with her, my husband decided a day before to ask her to confirm that lesson will take place at time it was scheduled for. We have busy time table and can't afford to continue rescheduling lessons without knowing about that in advance. She said "yes", but requested him to remind her again about their lesson 30 min prior the lesson itself. So she didn't even blink to ask my husband, her client, to remind her to provide services she was paid for.
This time my own patience got over. Besides that this tutor is highly irresponsible, non-punctual, trying to behave familiar, she shows absence of normal respectful person-to-person relation. I asked my husband whether he is really sure he wants to complete the left over lessons? What will be her next request? To make her coffee and put alarm near her ear for her to provide prepaid services? We decided that it's easier to 'lose' such a 'tutor' and to find someone really professional than to waste precious time on her.
After this we concluded that none of feedbacks can be trusted on Italki. The most disappointing experience we had with tutors ever. Better to search for other options.

I have an extremely bad experience in italki.
I met emergencies and missed a class. I found that the teacher wants me to transfer the whole credits to her account. I beg for forgiveness and hope the teacher can reschedule the class. The teacher said, "I wish I can, but the system does not allow me to do it." Then I ask the support team for help.
The support team told me I need to inform the teacher of my emergencies 24 hours before the class and get the grant. Otherwise, I still need to pay for the class.
If I can know after 24 hours I will meet emergencies (Car accident, disease etc.), then how can I say I meet emergencies?

A great website for independent language learners. It gives you the opportunity to take the learning into your own hands by allowing you to work at your own pace using the teacher and the method that YOU like. Took over 400 Japanese lessons there and it was an incredible experience. I am glad to be alive at this day and age.

Customer service is terrible on Italki.
I had a teacher (Ken Japanese teacher from the US) agreed to rebook a lesson I scheduled. I messaged him later to rebook. Nothing back, he disappeared. The lesson came and went, still no message. I messaged him several times to find out where he went. I checked my skype, he had messaged me there just before the lesson, which I already told him I won't be available at that time due to work. He basically didn't check his messages. He got back to me a week later after trying to contact him on skype and italki. So he really dropped the ball here. Normally I am sure he is a very nice guy and it was a shame this happened.
Now onto italki: and why they are terrible. At the same time I launched cases with customer service. I originally requested to get a refund and the ability to leave feedback. On a number of occasions cases went nowhere. Waited weeks. They told me someone would get back to me. After following up on numerous occasions they finally stated I can have my credit back, didnt address feedback which I asked a number of times.
They finally said I can't leave feedback to lessons which as "cancelled" and can only leave feedback after 3 days from the lesson. I stated the lesson had passed as normal weeks ago and was cancelled much later. They message back stating "sorry I didn't clearly explain" and proceed to state ANY lesson which has been launched as a dispute CAN'T have feedback left for. Only lessons I have received as normal. So teachers are allowed to waste people time, etc. And I can't let ppl know. Thanks a lot.

This company is from Shanghai. It is impossible to discuss politics and freedom of speech during class. It will record your class records, and if you say something political, it will delete you. I don't recommend everyone here.

I purchased two lessons with the same instructor. The first lesson was horrible and I requested the second lesson be cancelled. All cancellations require the instructors approval regardless if the lesson is more than 24 hours from start time. If the instructor refuses to respond to the cancellation request - Italki deletes the student's cancellation request. Don't waste your money.

Italki WAS a decent site, but the new update has made it a nightmare to use.

Italki is an excellent platform to learn and improve languages. I started using Itaki for three months ago, and I've upgraded my English level. I had English classes with a lot of English teachers from different parts of the world. So, I learned and met other cultures, the way of living, foods, and places. That's fantastic!

I love italki. I wish I had found it earlier. I am learning French much faster. I love my tutor. It is so convenient! Thank you!

Tutor never showed up. Have to wait 7 days to get the credit back. Very disappointing.

I heard before of italki a few times but was way too scared to talk to a stranger... in a language I don't actually speak. But somehow I felt drawn by this platform and so one day I decided I will give it a go. And what can I say... I love it. It is amazing. I found wonderful tutors and I have so much fun speaking and learning together with them. I have had no problems so far. Neither with my teachers nor with the payments or planning my schedule. I can really recommend this platform. I think it is very supportive and the prices of the teachers are reasonable. I learn Dutch at the moment and just love it. I am very happy to have found italki and I am also proud of myself of getting over my fears and actually trying it.

I agree with one of the previous comments that italki used to be a very good site but not anymore. It is technically very inconvenient. Besides, it is not working on the mobile devices. I used to schedule my lessons using my iPad wherever I was whenever I wanted , now I am committed to going home and doing it on my laptop. Missed a few requests because of this.
I can’t believe that it is happening in the world of mobile gadgets, but it is. I wrote to the support team, they said that they are aware of the problem but couldn’t fix it.

Italki is an excellent teaching method. Different teachers, good teachers and the price is fair.

Amazing website if you want to learn or improve a language.
The website platform is amazing, you have 100% guarantee that you are going to have the class. You can choose a good teacher based on their scores and reviews. I strongly recommend Italki.

I am really pleased with Italki. The website is professionally designed and managed. The teachers that I have worked with are also very professional and really want to help you to learn the language. I am glad to have found Italki.

The iTalki language learning system is excellent. Having a teacher available no matter where in the World I am, has been wonderful. I wish this service had been available many years ago, when I first needed to learn Bengali.
The only issue has been Internet connectivity, which has made some lessons extremely difficult to be part of. Hopefully this will improve as the Internet infrastructure in India improves.
I can highly recommend iTalki and my teacher Suhas.

i was taking classes with the same teacher on italki for over 9 month. the teacher was not experienced in DELE exam preparation, but she was very patient so i decided to continue with her. she knew my wife was pregnant, on the day of our class i informed her that I will take my wife to the hospital for she is having birth contractions, her response, was not the " don’t worry, hope she gets ell we will do the class later" but i am sorry i cannot postpone the class, and if you come back we will do the class with the remainder of the 60 minutes!” yes I will leave my wife who is under labor to come and do my Spanish class!
I wrote to the support team, I was getting the responses 2 days late! They had zero compassion zero understating and zero willingness to assist.
It is not about the money, it is about principal, the principal of having compassion with a fellow human being, a human studying foreign languages being open, tolerant and understanding of other cultures and nations. I am still unable to comprehend such behavior. How can a platform and teacher be so inhumane! Not willing to understand or even be happy for someone having a baby?
I do not encourage anyone to use such an inhumane platform!
In reply to the below: A human cause does not need a policy! you have failed to be fair and considerate! as for your support, from the first request, I wished to be refunded directly to my credit card, however, you did not! all you did was keep it on my account on your website so that I WOULD BE FORCED to spend it on your platform. Total Scam style behavior!
I just want to tell my story and let people judge by themselves, I am sure there are many people with similar stories.

Sorry, as I couldn't find the proper contact to talk about payment on the website, I am sending that e-mail to Trustpilot.
I live in NZ and I am keen on finding a teacher in your website.
What happens when a teacher cancel the class? Do we lose the money? Because Rebekah has canceled the class on 28th, March and today 1st, April I tried to book a new class and the website showed that I have not enough money to book a class.
On 18th, March I bought NZD 16, which wasn't used, and today I have just NZD 6. What is happening?
I hope to hear from you.

Don't load more money into the account than the lesson you plan to take. I made a typo accident and instead of loading 13.00 , I loaded 113.00. THERE IS NO REFUND!!!!!!! And, I have 94.00 sitting in my account. I don't want to take anymore lessons.......sent a refund request. NO REFUND!!! I can't honestly promote a site with this policy.

I think italki is a great way to find a suitable language teacher, and quite convenient as it's all done online. Also like how we can have trial lessons with teachers. Have had no issues so far.

It is cool platform for learning languages and communicating with foreign people.
But there are drawbacks to the site interface

I have been studying Spanish for just over 2 years. Although I find personal, face-to-face learning to be more productive, this is far more expensive and not as convenient as on-line learning. My experience with italki has been great. Of course, some teachers are better than others but iTalki provides an efficient and clear platform to find the teacher that is the best fit for you. Costs are clearly displayed (although they do surprise you with a 2-5% fee to buy iTalki credits). Using other community forums (e.g. to post writing samples and receive corrections) is also useful as it is free and very informative.
