I was excited finding out that I could have my water tested since I had just gotten a new Reverse Osmosis under sink model and wanted to test my water. I ordered two tests from e-watertest.com so I could test the pre-filtered water and post-filtered water. So the test kits came in and I followed the instructions to a T. When the paperwork asked if the sample was filtered or not I wrote in that I did not want to answer the question because I did not want it to be biased - I wanted this test to be blinded. I simply labeled each test kit with a sample identification mark - they were notated as "sample A" and "sample B" and clearly marked on the paperwork as such.
It took approximately 25 business days for me to get the results back (longer than what they advertise on their website). The test results are pretty straight forward, although instead of listing "chlorine" they list other things that make up the composition of chlorine.
So here were my results...: my filter (a Maximus II 6-Stage RO/DI System) lowered my Sulfate from 10 ppm (parts per million) to 5 ppm (i.e. 50%), reduced my Total Desolved Solids from 53.6 ppm to 19.33 ppm (64%), reduced my Fluoride from .44 ppm to .08 ppm (82%) So this was pretty much expected.
But here is the issue: My pre-filtered water is EXTREMELY high in chlorine... you can smell it like you are in a pool when it's unfiltered. Now, chlorine will evaporate if it is sitting out in an open container, but per the instructions I packaged it up tight in the provided containers with no air inside. THE TESTING ON MY PRE-FILTERED WATER CAME BACK WITH NO CHLORINE IN IT! which is totally unexpected. It also had 1.52ppb of Toluene in it. In contrast, my POST-FILTERED WATER HAD CHLORINE IN IT! which is wrong... there's no way it could have had it in the water. Chlorine can't even pass through the RO membrane and I can not smell ANY chlorine in the post filtered water either. My post-filtered water tested 15.48 ppb for Chloroform and 2.29 ppb for Bromodichloromethane whereas the PRE-FILTERED WATER HAD NEITHER.
It is my suspicion that the water tests (that were sent off at the same time) were confused with each other during the testing process. I also believe that they maybe left the pre-filtered water sitting out without a lid on it and allowed the chlorine to evaporate. Given my suspicion, I called the company.
I asked if chlorine would be in the test water sample that I had sent them or if it would have evaporated somehow during shipment. The lady I spoke with (Linda I believe) beat around the bush and would not answer my question. I finally explained what I thought happened and requested to speak with an actual lab technician to verify what may have happened but she would not put anyone on the phone and said that there was nothing they could do. She said "the results are the results."
So now I am out $300+ and not sure if the results are even accurate. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY as they have horrible customer service and their water test service is NOT RELIABLE. Contact me at anytime for more details: in dot dmand at gmail dot com.
"We, first of all, do not test for "chlorine residual", as free chlorine will dissipate during transit of the sample and can not be accurately reported, if not tested on site. "
- If this was the case then Linda should have simply told me so and not given me the run around.
"We do test the sample for "chlorinated" organic by-products (chloroform, etc.), which is what he is referring to in his comments. These chlorinated compounds are created when chlorine comes into contact with microscopic organic matter found in most public water systems throughout the United States. Unfortunately, this gentleman's filter is not designed to remove the chlorinated compounds found in the sample."
- If this is the case then proper customer service would have been to explain this to the customer and answer any questions he/she may have... such as if what you are saying is true, then why would the post filtered water have MORE chlorinated compounds in it?
