We rented through them in Sept 2018 (12 months ago). Yesterday, an erroneous and totally fraudulent charge of $2,000US shows up on my credit card.
Thankful to my bank for working to take care of it.
Beware that they will do everything to rip you off, so check your credit card statement carefully for at least a year after your rental.
What a scam. Shame on you, Sixt.

When picking our car up we were about to pay 10 Euros per day for GPS for our 7 day hire period ie 70 Euros. The lady behind the counter told us that they had a special offer on and we could upgrade our car to one with inbuilt GPS for only 35 Euros. We of course agreed to this. Upon receiving my credit card bill I noticed that we had been charge a whole lot more. In fact they had charged us 12.51 Euros per day for "upselling"; a total of 85.33 Euros. Lies and theft as far as I am concerned. Don't use them

We had a terrible expirience with Sixt POrtugal. Again fraudulent charges despite our pictures. Going to court would be more expensive/time consuming for citizens like us compare to corporations like them.
Despite having pictures they still sent us to legal for 400 euros.
Make sure you REQUIRE inspection before returning car with their signature. Film them, take 10s of pictures from upclose.
They will tell you to leave the car and go, that they will check the car later, but do that on your own peril. Expect a bill later from damages you haven't done. Sixt Portugal is not on my list of trustworthy companies.
We travel 3 months every year, we rent cars all the time. This was our worst experience ever.

Worse possible car rental experience ever. The car was returned just after the car wash with also cleaned interior and on the protocol they wrote that it was heavily soiled and I will be charged for cleaning! They never showed the protocol to me just told me to sign it. Customer service is super rude and arrogant plus they have no idea about their own services; nor how the invoicing and toll system works- so don’t expect that they will help you in anyway. Level of the English language is very poor- they use the words meaning of which they don’t know (e.g. automatically for them means after few days/weeks). You are not allowed to use any other credit/debit card than the one declared in the booking, so be prepared for extra penalties or cancellation of the reservation in case if you would like to for example play the deposit in other way than the card you had booked the car with.Avoid renting car from them!!!

Terrible experience from SIXT Portugal - worse than any of the lesser known companies I've used there. We had to search Lisbon airport for the car despatch location having been given poor instructions. We eventually arrived at the counter. The guy there refused to check the car around with me. The car was parked very close to neighbouring cars and was difficult to examine and we needed a torch in the low light of the car park. When we left, I noticed some that there was a light on the dash that had been there since driving off. It turned out that this was a tyre pressure warning. Had the SIXT representative helped inspect the car, this would've been pointed out. I had driven my whole family over 200km on a highway at speed, fully laiden with a front tyre with very low pressure. I believe that the car had not been properly checked and was therefore in a dangerous state to give a family embarking on a journey late at night.
Further to this, at the end, despite describing my experience I was charged EUR270.60 + EUR35.00 for the repair of the tyre on this Renault Twingo.
Don't trust SIXT with your credit card, they'll help themselves. Just find another company with better reviews.

Rented a Renault Clio for a week from Ponte Delgada airport, Sao Miguel, Azores.
For the first time ever (I've rented cars in various countries about 15 times), I was given a clear explanation of what sort of scratches they would charge for. He said that they only charge for scratches over 5 cm long, and if you can feel them with your finger. They also don't charge for scratches on the bit of the boot that your luggage might scratch, or if you add scratches to where there already was one.
This saves a lot of confusion and unnecessary photographs, and worrying!
To be honest, I returned it pretty dirty, and I had actually added a couple of scratches to the wheel rim, but as there was already one there it didn't matter. The guy didn't mind at all and was very friendly.
There's another car rental company here that's half of the price of all the others, so I assume that their business model is simply to get money from repeatedly charging for the same scratches, but that definitely doesn't seem to be the case with Sixt.
Also the car was fine.

I dropped my car off and it was confirmed to have no damage but over 2 weeks later I received a bill for a charge for damage. Very underhand and looking at the other reviews, it seems a complete con.

Final Update (hopefully) 8/20/2019:
Yesterday my Credit Card company contacted me to state they had resolved the dispute and that the temporary credit of the charges would be made permanent. I’m hoping this is the end of the saga. I’m only updating the review to 2 stars, which I sill feel like are generous considering overall how shady Sixt Portugal is acting as a company. I would not use them again in Portugal. I will say again though that I have used Sixt in the USA many times with no problems, and I would use them again in the USA.
Today I received the following email from SIXT, and will update the overall star rating on the review once the entire process is complete and charges are completely removed/reversed:
"Dear Mr. C*********,
We hope this email fins you well.
Since the client is our number one priority, we have reanalyzed your case and we will not proceed with the charge.
If you have any question, please do not hesitate on contacting us."
I've used SIXT in the USA a few times with no problems. That led me to believe they would be a reputable company to use in other parts of the world, such as Portugal. I was sorely mistaken.
I rented a car from Sixt in Lisbon at the end of April. Everything went fine during the rental itself. The car was fine, the return seemed fine, I even asked the return agent when we checked the car back in if everything was good with the car and return, and he said it was, that there would be no charges since the car looked fine and I pre-paid for the fuel.
Everything seemed fine and dandy.
Exactly two full months later after the return date, they charge my credit card for $495 for "scratches". It seems to be a pattern with them, that they wait until you're out of the country with know hope to see the supposed damages in person. I called them and they emailed me pictures of the car in a different location than where I returned it, with some tiny marks that were possibly scratches, possibly dirt. The photos were missing any date/time stamp, and the EXIF information from the images had been stripped.
I reply to the email, questioning them on this, and nothing, radio silence.
I reply again, nothing, radio silence.
I call them again, and they stated to email them with the information (which I had already done twice), and they state that they will look at it. They also stated that their system said I was not present for the check-in, which is patently false. I was there, as well as the other driver who witnessed them tell me everything was fine with the car. I emailed them again, but I'm not too hopeful.
Here's to hoping the merchant dispute process with my credit card company comes through. I suppose I have learned from this to more thoroughly document the condition of the car at check-out and check-in, but I thought I was safe with no need to document it when the guy that checked it in said it was fine with no additional charges.
Beware SIXT in Portugal. They do seem fine in the USA though. I've had a pleasant experience with them here at least. The US customer service states they cannot do anything about claims in other countries though.

Just gotta certified letter from Sixt.portugal, telling me that the car I returned 2 weeks ago in Madeira airport at 6:00am we’re i had to drop the keys on a box behind their office with no damage to the car and now I’m been charged €466.15 for a demage it never happened while I drove it. These is a total scam that it’s been happening many times from all the bad reviews Sixt Portugal is showing on their costumers reviews. Sixt headquarters world wide should take a look on it, because is not normal that 80% of the costumers are dissatisfied

Worst car rental experience possible. I was charged 160 euros for a minor damage that was even very difficult to spot and I was not given the chance to get evidence of the removal of such damage. In other words, such behavior leaves room for suspicion that Sixt actually took my money without making any repair. I feel sorry for the next customer that will rent the same car and won't be able to spot any damage. He will be charged too. In other words, when you rent a car from Sixt you may need take into account a greater expense (of at least 150-200 euros) to pay damages you did not cause.

I wish I have seen these reviews before booking the car, but as Sixt is a well-known company I didn't check them, but I certainly NEVER gonna use them again.
The rental was cheaper comparing to other companies, however if you don't buy their insurance, when you return the car, they find some damage for you to pay and when you try to contact them by phone, no one answers it. They have charged £336 on my credit card (nearly two months after the rental has happened) for a small scratch in the tyre that we are sure we haven't done it and even if we have done it, you could change all the 4 tyres for this amount.

Save yourselves a lot of trouble by avoiding Sixt Portugal
first charged €70 because the were able to put 2 extra liters in the full tank. After a lot of mails they admitted that they charged us double for the service and returned €30. I think I irritated them so after a few weeks they said they found a cigaret burn at the third row. wrong interior photo and all non smokers ==> € 1211,-. is there anyone with the same charge and willing to share the photo's. I would not be surprised when these were used more than once by those con artists.

Rented a car in Portugal.
First, their employee tried to 'upgrade' our car to a diesel car with only the difference of 130€, saying it would save us money in the end, since diesel is cheaper.
Second, the sneaky girl told us we have to rent an electronical Chip for the toll highway with the price of seven euro a day. We knew it's not that expensive and we asked her for other options, she said it's the only option! We looked online and saw that there is an option to rent it for 18€, and we showed her, so she responded - "And if you'll get stuck on the highway, who would you call" , the sneaky cow tried to sell us an sos package.
Third and last, we finished our trip with zero problems. Wanted to return the car, and the sixth employee saw a bend/ small shadow next to the back door, nothing a regular person will notice. He told us no worries, it's nothing. Now we got a 300€ bill in the post. We have to try and regulate it with the insurance.
Worst company. Avoid at all costs.

I wish I had looked at these reviews before booking the car, but as Sixt is a well-known company I didn't think to check, but I certainly will NOT use Sixt again.
I returned the rental car without any damages, but two weeks later I got a letter from Sixt claiming that there were damages to the car, charging me approx.190 Euro! I never experienced such a scam with any other car rental company. But reading all the reviews here about Sixt, frequent customer rip-off with fantasy damages seems to be the prefered business model of Sixt.
DO NOT RENT A VEHICLE FROM SIXT

DO NOT RENT FROM SIXT! They are trying to stitch me up for €500 of damages, which is a complete and utter fabrication.
I hired the car I Lisbon and returned it to Faro Airport in exactly the same condition it was in when I collected it. No accidents. I did not even any parking close or near other cars. I never do.
The over-zealous car checker at Faro Airport found small marks were not even noticeable to me in either Lisbon when I collected the car, or in Faro when I dropped it off. Because they were unnoticeable to me, I did not photograph them when I picked the car up.
However, Sixt are also refusing to show me photographic evidence from Lisbon that would prove that these unnoticeable marks were not on the car when I picked up the car.
I have used car hire firms regularly over the last 30 years. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before, because I have never used Sixt before. This was the first and last time I will use Sixt. Ignore the adverts about cheap car hire and them allowing you to #DriveSmug. You won’t be feeling smug after they stitch you up with false accident claims.

Never ever hire a car from this company!Their business plan consists of quoting a low price to get you in and then finding ways to scam you to make up their shortfall. In June we hired a Mercedes wagon between two couples to cater for all our bags ,before taking the car we did the obligatory look around the car and all was well.Picked up in Lisbon and returned at Porto airport. On handing the car back the guy looked UNDER the car as well as on the ROOF/ RACKS he then proceeded to show a few scratches under the front bumper and more scratches on the roof .This was definitely not caused by us and we think the next unlucky renter of this car will be charged again for the same scratches- this is all part of their modus operandi. The charge was over 1200 euro - it is just disgusting that they get away with this scam .DONT TOUCH!

I got the car at Lisbon Airport, i already had purchased online a full coverage insurance, and at the counter they convinced me it was better do the insurance with them, but in the end i payed 479euro for a 13 day rental of a Renault Clio.... more than what i payed for the car rental, i think at least they can't charge me for any damage like i see in the other reviews, definitely won't rent with them again...

Beware Sixt at the Porto airport.!
When I returned my car the pulled it aside and went over it with a fine tooth comb. It took 20 minutes. They showed me two scratches under the rear bumper that were not visible unless you got down on your hands and knees and looked under the bumper. They did the same to another American returning his car.
I told them I could not have caused the damage and that it must have been already there. Sixt cannot expect a customer to get down on their hands and knees to look under the bumper during a walk around inspection pre rental.
After I got home they emailed me to say there were going to charge my card $500! This place is a rip off for any tourists

Thieves. Charged us for non existent damage. Told us we weren’t allowed to take photos and threatened to call the police on us. We said ‘yes please do’. Shame they didn’t - we were there so long we were worried we’d miss our flight. Shift supervisor said they wouldn’t charge our card.....bunch of liers
Also Adblue warning came on after 4000 miles - something dodgy there too.
Very unpleasant experience - felt quite threatened. Never again.

Sixt have charge me 3 additional times since I have left Portugal.
* charged for Tolls roads (despite paying for the toll device when we picked up)
* charged for "damage" that the person at the drop said it was a small scuff on the tyre we would not be charged
* charged £171.05! for fuel and 1 additional driver (that we didn't ask for).
