I enrolled for scribd membership on 15th October. At the time of providing my card details, Scribd mentioned I can cancel my membership anytime during the free look-in period of one month.
Cancelled my membership about 10 days later and though that was the end of it. However, I got a message about 15 minus back that $8.99 has been charged to my card. Can Scribd explain why they give charged me despite my following their terms and conditions?

So, a month or so ago, I subscribed for the Scribd free membership trial, thinking that I might need it. In the duration that I had my free trial, I looked up only one book for some research work I was doing. I was informed via notification when I signed up for the free trial, that I would be charged money if I continued with my account from 5 November onwards (when my free trial ended, and my first paid month began). I was sadly mistaken - Scribd, when compared to other sites, is utterly useless. Today is 5 November, 2019. I just got a message around an hour ago ago, saying that I have been charged INR 636.16 from my debit card, for the Scribd membership. I was not asked if I wanted to continue, or informed just before this happened, that it was about to happen. A warning beforehand would have been nice. I would have cancelled my membership immediately, before the amount could have been deducted from my account. My money has been deducted from my account without my explicit and express permission. Regardless, since I have not used Scribd services for the paid month that begins today, I have spent the majority of the past hour, trying to get a refund by contacting Scribd support, but every time I press the link to do so, I get a notification telling me that I must verify my account by activating the link Scribd has sent to my registered email account, which I will receive atmost within ten minutes. I have pressed the resend button multiple times, and gotten no link - and its clearly been more than ten minutes. I tried changing my email address thinking that that might work, but it has been to no avail. I still have not received the link. I have not used Scribd's services and I want my money back. I want it back immediately.
Scribd SUCKS if I could leave a 0 star rating, I would. They like to steal money from people. Hope they go out of business.

We never signed up with these frauds and I am contesting their recurrent 8.99/month charges now with mastercard. I've no idea how they got my card number but these people should be avoided like the plague and prosecuted.

So, a year ago (11/15/2018), I subscribed to the Scribd free membership trial. Then I signed the one-year membership and I used it during the year. Although I was not planning to renew the subscription, then today (11/15/2019) the site renewed it without any notification, I was not asked if I wanted to continue or informed just before this happened, that it was about to happen. There was no warning. I would have canceled my membership immediately before the amount could have been deducted from my account. The money has been deducted from my account without my explicit and express permission. Since I don't want to use Scribd services, that begins today (11/15/2019), I have spent a few hours trying to get a refund by contacting Scribd support, but every time I press the link on the page, I get a notification telling me that I must verify my account by activating the link Scribd has sent to my registered email account, which I will receive at most within ten minutes. I have pressed the resend button multiple times and gotten no link. I have not used Scribd's services in the past months and I don't want to use it anymore. So, please, I want my money back.

could've sworn i unsubscribed the day i signed up for this. I wanted to download one book and unsubscribe. A month later i get charged for it. I NEVER used the service besides that one time. I'd like a refund then I'd give 5 stars. But it seems many people are having similar problems.

I made an account and subscribed to a free trial one year ago. At the end of the trial period, I tried to unsubscribe but it was not possible since my account stated I did not have a membership with Scribd. I reached out Scribd and was informed that they couldn't locate any membership linked to my e-mail address. Nevertheless, they charged me. I reached them out again and I quote their response "as a one-time courtesy", they will refund me PARTIALLY. They make it hard for people to unsubscribe and do not take responsibility for it. Worst service ever. Do not subscribe to Scribd.

I wish I had seen this sooner...!
I had cancelled about three times, even though I reached the final cancellation screen (there's a small green banner that appears) and still got charged. I had to disconnect accounts from PayPal and block them as I caught three extra charges— I was told after my help desk inquiry that refunds will *not* be issued 30 days after a charge goes through. This includes unauthorized charges.
Please, I'm begging anyone who sees this DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THE SUBSCRIPTION. In the event you have signed up— The cancellation process is opaque at best (especially compared to other places and services in general). To finalize your cancellation, there's a link that is almost hidden that you MUST click before you have actually formally cancelled...this *after* you have clicked the button to cancel.
In writing, I know that last sentence is odd, but it's definitely true. Please be careful.

After I had a subscription on scribd.com, I found that every month two payments were taken from the card on different days (both $ 8.99, the monthly subscription being $ 8.99)
After I closed my account, they continued to take my money monthly.
After long discussions via email, we received confirmation of the closing of the account and the return of a single amount of $ 8.99 improperly withheld.
After confirming the closing of the account, the surprise!
He continues to take money from my monthly account, but I no longer respond to emails.
I had to go to the bank monthly to report abusive transactions.
There are credit card thieves.

I thought I cancelled it, but it looks like I did not.
The reason is that when I click on cancel membership, I am taken to the next page with no clear sign it isn't done. Even though there is no clear sign you need to scroll down to continue cancelling, it's still needed.
Why can't you be more honest about this process, detailing everything one needs to do, so nothing like this happens? I am sure I am not the only one with this problem, check out this article: https://the-digital-reader.com/2015/07/03/psa-have-you-cancelled-your-account-at-scribd-you-might-want-to-double-check-that/.

I was double charged twice on one account due to auto generated 2 subscriptions on one account. I contacted their support but they refused to return money. So they made 18 dollars out of the air on me.In all legal systems the money that you mistakenly get, must be returned to the owner. It seems that the Scribd negates the principle of civil law. I wonder how many customers such as me do they rob per month? On this site I see there are many, but I believe that there are much, much more. I guess that if they ignore our problem they made this “bug” one of the financial source of their “business”. So it is not a bug at all, i think, it is the intention. Maybe it is time to start a petition on the White House site about customers and authors the rights of whom they infringe?
UPDATED. It is after the SCRIBD's response below. They simply make fun of customers
complaints as 3 hours after the hypocritical response below they refused to refund. It is how they manage business. They simply don't care. They don't care about customers. They laugh at you.

I am an entrepreneur myself and found the hard way about practices of Scribd. I cancelled nearly an year ago but they have a multi step cancellation process where each step looks like the cancellation is complete. I am going to talk to my lawyer to start a class action lawsuit - I have saved some of the screenshots and can hopefully in this process help others that have lost money.

Scribd offers a great range of books, audio books, documents, magazines and sheet music all for one low monthly price. In response to some of the other reviews, it is clear when signing up for the free month that you will be billed unless the subscription is cancelled. The cancellation process is really easy. If you love audiobooks and reading I'd recommend giving it a go.

I cancelled my account over 4 months ago and they continue to charge me. I am sick of this. I went online every month and cancelled it and it magically reappears. No customer service, you cannot call them to resolve these issues.

If you elect to ignore all these people warning you off, at least take this advice; do not save all the audiobooks you are interested in to your reading list. They will make 80% of the books unavailable to you until your free trial has passed. This bait and switch amounts to unfair trade practices as defined in the state consumer protection laws of which I am aware. If I have one-tenth of the trouble canceling that the rest of these folks describe, I am going to make it my new hobby to get cease and desist orders issued by every state they do business in. (Note to Scribd.com, you'd be better off telling me to fornicate with myself than giving me that scripted, "sorry, but there's always something to read" response I keep seeing. I'd applaud that measure of honesty.

This company has the worst customer service and steals money. I subscribed for the free month and used the website to look at one book one time. After I used it, I canceled the account. To cancel the account it asks you 3 or 4 times if "you are sure you want to cancel". I canceled the account and there were no charged and then all of a sudden after 2 months of the account being canceled they started charging my bank account. I got a notification from bank a few days ago and it showed all the monthly charges for the past four months. I filed a complaint to the website and they said they will only refund me for the current month they charged me and my account will remain active for free. Well today I went on the account to see if the company stuck to their word and they disabled my account. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM DO NOT USE IT THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!

Scribd really sucks. Service is horrible. Then, once I canceled subscription and told them exactly what I think of them, they continue to send me weekly spam. I have unsubscribed numerous times. Avoid at all costs!!

I cancelled my Scribd account in March. I noticed a charge on my account for $8.99 on 9/19. Upon forget review I was charged by Scribd $8.99 in July and August. I attempted to contact customer service via 4158969890 and there was a message stating that customer service was only handled online. I attempted to request a refund online and was sent a message by “Tesh” stating that they couldn’t find my charge and to send additional information. I sent a screenshot of the charges as well as the additional information to “Tesh”. I received an email from “Linda” in response to that message to “Tesh” requesting the same info I provided to “Tesh”. I’m not sure what type of scam company this is, but what I do know is that my money needs to be refunded NOW. My next step is to contact the Better Business Bureau.

I subscribed for a free trial and did not use it at all. After 2 weeks of not using it I wanted to cancel my subscription. On my account it tells me I do not have any subscription and no credit card on file,so I couldn't cancel it. I was getting charged every month. Finally, I contacted technical support and got an answer to delete the account. I followed provided steps, deleted account, but they are continuing charging me. Looks like I will need to contact my credit card company. I can not deal with it anymore.

If I could I would give no star.
I purchase the subscription and I was really enjoying the site until I saw my credit card bill. I was charged for the trial.
I contacted them and they refused to give a refund and also made a lot of excuses like I accessed premium content.
They also said that even though that was a trial I was going to be charged since I did not cancel, that's ok since I was planning to continue being a subscriber but I understand that I should only be charged after the trial not during it.
