We have just started (and ended!) using MoneyGram's online service. We set up an account in my name and managed to make one online transfer. When we subsequently set up an account in my wife's name and initiated a transfer, it was immediately cancelled and the account was closed.
I called MG and talked to a person with an accent that made him very difficult to understand. I was confronted with a large number of more or less relevant questions, which I tried to answer as far as possible. Following the "interview", also my account was closed - without any explanation.
I now wrote MG asking for an explanation in order for me to rectify any problems. Here is the core of the reply:
"Thank you for contacting MoneyGram Online.
After careful review, your MoneyGram Online profile is closed. We apologize for the inconvenience, however to protect the integrity of our security, we are unable to provide specific details regarding why the online profile has been deactivated.
We are sorry to inform you that there is no further possibility for you to use our services."
To make it completely ridiculous, the answer says that if I need further information, I can use the online web form - which is what I already did.
MoneyGram - never again!

A complete farce of a service.
I needed to receive some money from my father. I spent hours going to five different MoneyGram agents: four of them the person responsible was on holiday or their connection with MoneyGram was not working!
The fifth one made me fill in their forms, went through my ID and then said they could give me my money because the sender's name was not spelled correctly on my form!
As the other reviewers here have said, MoneyGram and their network of mainly dodgy backstreet agents will use any and every excuse to NOT give you your money.
There is so much paperwork and bureaucracy imposed by MoneyGram that it's not worth using the service anymore. It's a convoluted process to get your money.
MoneyGram agents are mainly low-paid, salaried staff and therefore have no motivation or desire to help you. They just want to get rid of you.

Worst company ever. They locked my account but would not give me a reason why and then I had to jump through multiple hoops to try and get it sorted and had to go through their "security procedure" multiple times - with questions getting very personal and which Moneygram do not need to know. I was told if I didn't answer ALL of their questions then the account would stay locked. Any other company would move on to ask another question to verify, Moneygram refused. I was in a public place and not comfortable having to run through vocally that I'm having to send money because of a death I dont really wish to have a conversation about. I find this completely ridiculous as their other departments I spoke to had no problem with confirming who I am. Congratulations Moneygram, you've moved another customer over to Western Union!
