Ordered the 16 day SIM for our upcoming trip to Tokyo, SIM arrived on time and well packaged. Ordering process was fairly simple to use!

Just back from Japan. Installation easy. Instructions easy. Sim worked faultlessly the entire three weeks. Japan phone system is slow. Don’t expect 4g or 5g service. It’s 3G and lite at times. But it’s fine for emails. You can use WhatsApp or FaceTime etc to call.

Fantastic service and product. Pre ordered about a month in advance of 25 day trip to Japan. Arrived within a few days with clear instructions and a couple of bonus vouchers for usage in Japan
Exchanging SiM was easy which we did when the plane landed in Narita and by the time we were in The terminal It had all connected. Worked perfectly throughout our trip from Tokyo right down to Kyshu.
Worked out at less than two pounds per day and even less when we exchanged the value of the vouchers worth around £12.
Would thoroughly recommend

We have just returned from our 10 day trip to Japan. We bought 3 x 16daysims from Mobal and from the very start there was problems. Very poor instructions which we followed exactly to no avail. The problem was then compounded by their awful and non existent customer service. No where to phone or no shops on the ground. Just an email address. So I emailed and after about 36 received a generic email back. Then I got an email from a real person with no help what so ever just stating the obvious and providing links to troubleshoot that were not the issue. So I emailed back and this continued for a number of days with different customer service employees asking all the basic questions like "check that your phone is unlocked and able to take this Sim" Throughout this time 3 member's of my family are without any phone service and had to rely on roaming charges from their supplier back in Ireland. I eventually gave up corresponding with their customer support as it was infuriating and rubbish. I went out and bought an over the counter 7 day unlimited data plan for €30.

I bought my SIM card for Japan way in advance and activated it just before my trip. SIM card comes with very detailed instructions on how to activate it and how to adjust your settings.
WARNING: do not attempt doing anything without reading the material provided.
I've spent around ¥9000, and I thought I was sorted. I took an Android SIM for Samsung S10 device.
WARNING: even though in the West, SIMs are universal, it's not the case here.
I activated the SIM Oct 10/11 and arrived in Japan on 12th just before the Typhoon. As one would have imagined, I must have my SIM working during that time. It wasn't.
I immediately went to the Softbank office at the airport, and they couldn't help me and rendered me to the customer service number on the MOBAL instruction booklet. There is no actual person to talk to, and I was referred to the website with 24/7 support -that was untrue as well. There is no chat support, only the email form at the site. They got back to me in 2 days just after I already bought a new travel sim and spent a total of ¥6500. By that time, being frustrated during the typhoon and limited contacts to back home - I broke my phone and had to buy a new one, so I decided to pick the iPhone since I already had a new sim it didn't matter.
Then I heard from MOBAL when they wanted to do troubleshooting with them -I don't have 24h between each troubleshoot.
I had a bad experience and haven't received the service I paid. I felt unsupported, and when they got in touch, I felt attacked since I know a lot about setting up phones and technology in general.

My Experience with Mobal
I heard of Mobal from a youtuber, who recommended it to anyone visiting Japan. I also checked this website (trustpilot) and found positive reviews. I will be in Japan for a year, and I thought it would be convenient to get a Mobal SIM card to be shipped to the UK before I leave.
It arrived well in time (3 day delivery, nice!) with clearish instructions on how to install it. I didnt install it until I arrived in Japan but it was easy with the instructions and guidance on the Mobal website. It worked straight away, with decent speeds and ability to text and call however I liked. I purchased the 6 month unlimited plan.
After about a month, my needs started to change. Firstly, just because it is a SoftBank APN does not mean SoftBank will help you or you have any access to SoftBank's useful services (discounts, age verifications, using LINE to it's full extent etc). After I learned this I was a bit upset, because I expected a bit more use from my SIM card. Most people who give 5* reviews for Mobal are in Japan for under a month, and aren't interacting with local people and culture to the extent that I am. That's about when I realised that I had really messed up.
Within a month, my 20GB of "extra fast" data was burnt through due to background processes. After this, I expected maybe a few hundred Kb/s speeds... But what I was actually getting was 10Kb/s, completely useless. Mobal was calm and helpful, but I had to use WiFi only for a week which isn't ideal for my job or social life.
I asked Mobal if they had any records of my data usage so I could evaluate it to see if there was something wrong (my data monitoring app stated I only used 15GB by that point). They said they do not record "live records of data usage as [they] receive this information with a delay". This worried me a bit, but I just applied a data saver and limited background processes. This month (October), I lasted until the 26th and then the extra slow data came in.
SoftBank's website says that after a extra fast data limit is reached on any of their unlimited data SIM, the speed is capped at 128Kb/s, but I wasn't nearly getting that much, so that's another way I messed up by relying on Mobal's services for a long term.
Furthermore, I dread to say I realised I was getting ripped off way too late. The 20GB fees I was paying (5000¥) raised after my first month, and I was charged nearly 6000¥ for October. This was not what I expected and I still have yet to contact Mobal about this, asking for a reason.
The amount I paid for this service actually equates to much better services in Japan. SoftBank offers 50GB with unlimited access to social media and clearly outlines the excess data caps, for essentially the same price. So I felt a bit sour.
TLDR: To end things on a good note, Mobal has extremely helpful customer support. They are affirmative and clear, I only have experience with emailing but they've been great with me. In fact, I don't even want to tell them I'm leaving because I like them so much I'm sure they'd be able to convince me to stay!! The delivery and support in home countries and for people travelling is brilliant, and I do recommend their services for short term visitors to Japan. Any time over a month and you're better off with getting a local SIM or pocket wifi at an English speaking SIM store, with a side of research.
I'm in the process of cancelling my 6 month plan, which should be possible (though it may incur a fee), but I don't feel hopeful about it at all. I'm quite worried I will be charged unnecessarily or with hidden fees like others that have stayed for longer periods of time as others have. I will update this as necessary.

I purchased a Mobal phone for my trip to Italy. They installed the sim card and shipped it to me. When I arrived in Italy I had no network service because the sim card was installed wrong. Unable to contact customer support because you need a phone to contact them. Not much fun being in a foreign country with no means of communication.

I'm very happy with the Mobal SIM whilst in Japan, it's ideal for those of us who used to live in Japan & visit occasionally. I can keep the same number and activate when I return.

Waves after waves of hidden charges.
At first I assumed they had some honesty.
Turned out to be some kind of scammer.
Use Hanacell instead if you can.

Easy to use and reasonable price. Will definitely buy again and recommend the sim to others.

One word - excellent. I was anxious about changing my SIM for a 28 day visit to Japan & keeping fingers crossed it would work & I would still have access to all my Apps. No worry required as it worked like clockwork. I ordered the wrong SIM initially & had to E-mail to see if I could return the one I had ordered. Again it went like clockwork & my new SIM arrived in 2 days & my account was refunded.
Definitely the best choice & the customer service was without fault.

I’ve found the service given very good. I picked up th SIM card at the airport easily, and activation was straightforward. I like the way costs are transparent, and suspension, due to having to temporarily leave Japan, was quite easy.

Highly recommend. My son was travelling with friends in Japan for 9 weeks. Having a local phone number was important to him, and Mobal allowed for that. The plan gave him tons of data. Everything worked seamlessly, and we received emails when the phone was activated, allowing us the comfort of knowing he had a working phone as soon as he swapped out the SIM card on the plane and landed in Japan.

I got hit with a $0.80 charge for a text I did not send.
Below is the reply I got from them.

If you are using an iPhone the iMessage App will show SMS text messages as green (chargeable) and iMessages as blue (not chargeable as sent by WiFi).
If you do not have any 'green' messages from September 25th then the text would have been sent in the background by the system or an app. This often happens when a new SIM card is installed as it activates/tests the service is working (iMessage/Visual Voicemail etc). As we have no control over your device we cannot block such usage and it is chargeable by the Network Operator.
We recommend that you contact the app developer or manufacturer of your device for further help if you would like to prevent this from re-occurring in the future.
This is not the first time I have been charged for texts I did not send.
I have been charged for iMessages which should have been free.
If you use this service, expect to periodically get charged for texts you did not send.
Expect that if you try to dispute the charges that the company will argue against you and maintain their position.
I am switching to Google Fi instead.

This is a very good product when it works however I did experience problems which ultimately led to the replacement of the SIM that I was initially issued. Since this took place once I was on the ground in Japan it was somewhat inconvenient.
Ordinarily, I would have been been sanguine about this as, after all, things do go wrong. However there was a real lack of urgency in following up on my issue, too many wasted diagnostic loops and, seemingly, a lack of understanding that I, as the user, was without a phone service and I needed a replacement SIM quickly. Eventually this was sorted out but the support team is offshore and there is no onshore support in Japan as far as I could tell. I would like to see a tighter integration with Softbank so that I could have secured support from their shops on the ground in Japan. I did try this but there is no connection as far as Softbank is concerned so no support.
I hope this is useful. It is relatively expensive service and I would expect better support when things go wrong. It is not intended as any criticism of the individual support engineers who tried to assist me but, as might be expected, they are limited in what they can actually do and deliver on the ground in Japan.
Thanks for reading!

This is the second Sim Card System I have use in Europe on vacation and compared to the first one I used your system is by far superior to the other system. I had little to no outage experienced and as we travelled from country to country the system changes from providers seem seamless with no effort on my part. I would highly recommend you system to others.

I purchased a basic Mobal (non-smart) phone several years ago. It has worked fine, always picking up a network right away, with two exceptions. It did not work in Bermuda a few years ago. The company later told me that the phone was incompatible with the Bermuda networks. A few months ago I went to Vienna and the Czech Republic. It worked fine in Vienna and in the many small towns we visited in the Czech Republic. However, when we got to Prague, it did not pick up a network at all. I am assuming that I need a more up-to-date phone for my next trip to Switzerland, Germany and Holland.

We have nothing but positive feedback regarding the Japan Unlimited SIM card. Initiation of the service was seamless, both for my iPhone and my wife’s Android. When we arrived I Japan we just inserted the cards and were immediately online with internet service (and phone/text I assumed). We never had any issues with connectivity during our 3-week visit to Japan. We started in Tokyo and continued on to Nikko, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Hakone. We
had strong internet service every time we tried to use it.
I’d recommend Mobal to anyone heading to Japan.

Mobal was very easy to set up, clear instructions with simple steps. I didn't actually activate my sim card (reasons below), but my friends did theirs and they had zero issues with signal throughout our stay in Japan.
I only needed a sim card from Mobal for one month. What's most impressive is that I actually had to change my stay in Japan, so activating the simcard no longer became worth it for me. I asked Mobal support could I just cancel the sim card and then receive a refund. To my surprise, they actually said that this was totally fine! As a gesture of goodwill they refunded the vast majority of my spend on the sim card which I thought was incredibly fair.
10/10 customer service. Which from experience is rare for a mobile provider!

Excellent SIM and phone performance in multiple countries. Good support when you can get hold of them, which usually takes some time. If they were promptly reachable, I would give them a full five stars.

just wanted to drop you a line to congratulate you guys on a brilliant product.
I love to travel and usually use a SIM card from the UK that has a good international option. However, that SIM card wouldn’t work in Japan... I’m so glad I found Mobal and would highly recommend.
The SIM card I had was the unlimited data only for 16 days. It arrived within a couple of days, which was great. I was a little nervous that it wouldn’t work and that I’d be stuck without data (which I use all the time when travelling for maps, social media and to keep in touch with people)... I needn't have worried.
As soon as I put the SIM card into my phone upon arriving in Japan (and rebooting the phone) I had immediate access to a great 4G network that never failed.
Despite being up in some hills in Koyasan and in many different cities across Japan, I had a good, strong and fast network that I could rely on.
I was able to use all my social media apps, made numerous video calls to friends and family back home, uploaded YouTube vlogs that my family were watching on a daily basis... it was marvellous.
Some of my fellow travellers were trying to use a mobile WiFi device which meant they were often without a network connection, or had intermittent connection from their usual UK provider, at a ridiculous cost. They were all amazed at how well my sim was working.
The price seemed a little steep at first, but it was absolutely worth it. Thank you for helping to make my Japan trip even more awesome.
