Don't buy your souveniers anywhere else. These are ethically sourced and helps all kinds of NGOs, from street children who now make bracelets instead of begging, disabled people and also Maasai women.
The shop which is split into two (one is for materials and clothing, with a person at the ready to make you whatever you want along with pre made stuff.. And then there's the shop for souvenirs inc paintings, made made crafts etc all made my different people and each with a story). I paid for a painting to be created by an artist who's work I liked, I bought a photo album hand made from leather with Maasai decoration and even the guy who was helping me, because he had just become a senior warrior which requires his head to be shaved he'd included shells he'd worn in his hair before the transition.. And his mum was who had decorated it which I loved. So close to home instead of being made in a factory.
There's so much choice in the shop, bags, sandals, jewellery, place mats, wood and stone carvings, so many different kinds of pictures, some painted, some carved with a knife using acrylic and some created from leather which made a lovely effect and so natural along with everything else inbetween you could possibly want.
Everything is so well made and the customer service is faultless. They can't do enough for you and they make sure your every need is met. And if there's something your looking for they'll help you find it or even make it. And you know your money is going to a good place, helping people who need the money.
Im so glad I found this place and I was lucky enough to watch some pictures be created in my hostel (mountain bikes house) by one of the artists, who each have a different style.
Thank you thank you thank you and I wish you all the best in the future

Mama Africa is the shop you wish every City had. Peter and his Mom are kind, authentic and genuine in offering the best of Tanzania. Teh paintings, clothing, sculptures, etc... are really great and the fact that some portion of the proceeds is returned to the community and local NGOs is very inspiring. We took advantage of Peter's Moshi Sunset Bus tour also - highly recommend!

Mama Africa is the best gift shop in Moshi for sure! The staff a super friendly and give good, honest prices. Peter and his Mum, the owners are an amazing team and make you feel so welcome. There are some really cool things in this shop that you can’t find elsewhere in town and I really feel like a friend not just a customer!

Having been fortunate enough to travel to many parts of the world, I've been to my fair share of souvenir and gift shops; none come close to the genuinely warm feel and good vibes of Mama Africa!
Peter is truly a gem of a person, and him and his team make your experience more than just a grab-and-go. In partnering with several local NGO's, Mama Africa mandates to create a social impact by sourcing products that give back to the community. Further, if there is a specific product, design or painting a customer wants made or replicated, Peter will go above-and-beyond to do what he can.
Whenever I find myself back in Moshi and strolling through the winding streets, amidst all the hustle and bustle is Mama Africa. Peter and his mother form a special duo that make you feel comfortable while you browse, treat yourself, and/or look for the perfect gift. I can meet an artist that just spent hours painting a lifelike scene of the Big 5, try on earrings and bracelets of all different colours, pick out vibrant Kitenge fabrics, hear the story behind a Tinga Tinga painting, or just sit and watch the 'pole pole' pace of Moshi unfold - all within this one magical shop.
