I had 4 accounts with FreshBooks. 2 paid, 2 on a free plan. Prices have repeatedly gone up, the featureset has shrunk (with that last big redesign), and stuff just breaks without notice (AMEX account sync stopped working for almost a year and I had to enter everything manually). On top of everything, they just up and took the free option away one day and I couldn't log into my 2 free accounts without setting up a paid plan. Find other options or risk losing access to your data unless you pay up. I can't access my transactions, my receipts, nothing. I could not discourage this platform enough....stay away.

To whom it may concern,
This is a review of our experiences with Freshbooks that has been copied and pasted onto every platform where these types of reviews are appropriate. Our goal is to make this review as visible as possible, and to let people know why we are a DETRACTOR to Freshbooks as a business.
We started with Freshbooks Classic back in 2016. As a small business, what freshbooks offered in terms of features and pricing was reasonable. At the time we were growing exponentially so soon we ended up with the need to add more and more users. This drove the price up significantly with Freshbooks as well, which we understood and considered to be a sunk cost.
Now in 2017, Freshbooks announced that they were changing over to New Freshbooks, and while there are no hard facts to back this claim up, we strongly believe that New Freshbooks and their bank card syncing feature was not as built out at launch as it could have been, with potentially leaked data, as the moment we synced our bank card with New Freshbooks, we started receiving spam / phishing emails where they somehow knew the exact dollar amount within our banking accounts. We quickly reverted back to Freshbooks Classic following a realization that a lot of the features within New Freshbooks were not worth making the switch.
Now, being back on Freshbooks Classic, because our monthly plan was suddenly considered a legacy plan, even when we restructured our administrative team to require less and less users, the price stayed the same. Each time we communicated with customer support, either by phone or email, would result with the same reply that if because we were on a legacy plan, instead of the price going down when removing users, it would actually be more expensive for us to switch to the newer plans, even with less users.
Now due to most of us having a background in the telecommunications industry, this type of pricing seemed like something a company would do when it was a monopoly / oligopoly like the big three telecommunications company in Canada. After the third or fourth time of being told that when we paid for nine or more users (while only having four active users) was the best option, we decided to price out Freshbooks with another cloud based accounting software.
To nobody on our team’s surprise, the other accounting software, had a far more built out platform. They also had way more features (including payroll) that were standard in both accounting and reporting than Freshbooks. They were also much cheaper by more than half.
From the start of 2019, we’ve made the switch and decided to wind down operations with Freshbooks. Since Freshbooks bills in USD for some reason, we were paying upwards of CAD$ 150.00 a month for a service we essentially only needed for cloud storage, due to the fact that there was no direct option to export INVOICES. We decided to reach out to Freshbooks customer service back in May / June. After a long and strenuous phone conversation with the customer service representative (let’s call him MJ), as well as email correspondence, all parties involved agreed that we would downgrade the account to Freshbooks Lite option, which would provide us with access to our invoices as needed, and a single user login (which is what we have been doing since January). We considered this matter as done. Anything that we had overpaid prior to communicating with the customer service team was written off.
Now today, we receive another invoice for the full $130 USD (conversion to CAD). When we follow up on the email correspondence, it is clear that MJ never made any of the changes that were discussed and approved, and had no recollection of the discussions and was quite unapologetic.
As a full disclosure, the monthly charge isn’t really a significant expense to us due to the nature of our business and our operations; however, there is a principle involved. There should never be a reason when a business has to pay more, just because they can. There should never be a moment when the customer service representative promises to make changes and then proceeds to drop the ball and forget everything once the phone call ends.
Frankly, if this was not such a waste of our valuable time, we would pursue this much further.
A Detractor of Freshbooks

Expensive for successful businesses. Looks shiny but their Zapier automation does not work correctly (my template did not show on automated invoices and thus they looked terrible. They have not fixed this in years unfortunately.
My bank was not added in years. And to top it all up a representative called me and told me, that if I wanted to use Freshbooks further (after long years of good custom on my side and highest plan paid already), that they will now charge me based on the number of CUSTOMERS I have...wow, other companies grandfather their loyal customers'pricing plans, Freshbooks does not care. I told him again about the multiple difficulties I have with Freshbooks but still, they wanted more money. I switched now and they do not get my money. anymore. Good luck Freshbooks!

Great experience for my small business. The client portal is especially nice! The best experience for my clients I've tried.

The software is very easy to use, looks great, and the customer service is very good. I do wish they had more flexible billing options, though. I bill literally one client, so paying for five is overkill. Removing the free tier was a mistake in my opinion. I could even handle $3-5 a month, as I know good software and support requires a steady stream of income, but I think the competition offers more (invoice options, etc.) for less or no money. Currently having an internal battle whether I want to pay so much for pretty UI or not.
Also pretty lame PDFs aren't viewable in the Android app.

I've only been using this software a month and I love it. It's intuitive and easy to use and makes doing my monthly accounting a breeze. I used to put all of my expenses and income into a spreadsheet and use another piece of software for sending invoices and tracking payments but now I can do everything in one place. I love that it doesn't feel like an accounting software. The support is great. I just had a very helpful response from Shane. I'd love it if there was a chat function though to get immediate responses, but otherwise so far so good.

Although i am sure this is very Good for the US market . unfortunately having to collate UK Vat information through this program is poor. The inability to calculate your Vat returns is very important and a basic feature of which you'd expect this to be able to handle but as the US system seems to not require this kind or job , it simply doesn't have the features to calculate such data. Dates are set in the Us format also. Using the program basically you can tell this was designed for the us market with very little adaptations to users in the Uk. Small details that really make a difference.

Perfect for independent contracting. The billable time-tracking feature is very flexible and convenient.

I used Freshbooks for years. Probably since 2007. But due to few matters with the business I had to go to Xero. I was in chat with Melanie and Rich B from customer support asking for help with data migration. They were extremely helpful I have to say. I kept changing the goal post but they were kind enough to accommodate my needs until I was able to fully migrate my data successfully. I requested support from XERO as well during the migration. But I have to say Freshbooks support was off the roof. Thanks Melanie and Rich B :)

It's a little pricey if you have multiple businesses. Otherwise I love everything about it.

I'm really loving FreshBooks as an accounting solution so far. I love the simplicity. I do find myself wishing I could further customize invoices. Also, maybe some option to configure your tax profile so FreshBooks could estimate quarterly taxes would be awesome.
Overall, I'm very pleased. FreshBooks has allowed me to free up time and focus on growing my business. Thank you!

I like it except for that you can't put in specific dates it only say 15 - 30 after the date of the invoice. I would like to be able to use both fields not just 1.

I really don't like how you sell your subscription as having all these features, however, not all of the features are operational which makes me feel that your purposely lying to the public just to obtain new clients.
I'm currently transferring all my info to QuickBooks and will no longer be using your service.
The reply you sent me had nothing to do with the issues i had with the software.

Its only an invoice system that is missing basic tools. I'll like to be able to:
- send proposal/estimate "link" to client
- Edit the subject when I send a proposal to a client
- Create categories of my services and track income for each category.
Hope this helps to improve the system.

I'm really sorry to say Freshbooks is just not working at all, I have used it for a year, in the beginning it was ok but unfortunately it gets worse all the time. Now it has reached the point where every week I log in, at least one of the automated connections to either my bank account or paypal is down or where I pull in the invoices from my webshop, meaning that I have to waste hours manually looking through and entering what is missing. Making the software completely pointless. The whole idea is to have an automated system and it just doesn't work, moving to another platform is not really an option, so a bit stuck with something that doesnt work well.
IN RESPONSE TO REPLY BELOW - no resolution - was just told that it’s not something they can fix, blame PayPal and my bank for selecting random expenses not to import - it worked well for a while but please don’t waste your time on this software, there are better and more professional options out there.

Holy Awesome! Proposals, invoices, projects, expenses and time tracking all in one. I run everything though Freshbooks. It is crazy how I have been able to streamline creating invoices and proposals, and its great having one place for all the other data like time tracking, instead of in being spread across other apps.

Freshbooks makes my life as a freelancer so easy! I sent an invoice yesterday morning to a new client with the ability to pay with a credit card and they paid the same day! It's so efficient to import expenses (I used the CSV method) so I can keep everything financially in one place. I love having the dashboard so that I can see at a glance what my finances look like. Also, invoice creation is a breeze and that is the bread and butter of the business.
My only critique is that I wish the proposal creation was a bit more flexible. For instance, if there could be a page-by-page interface that allows you to see what it may look like printed out. Think PDF or Microsoft Word creation experience. The ability to add formatting and images is nice but I'd like to not see it look like an invoice as much. Overall, amazing product and thanks for building it!

FreshBooks should be a great product. It's easy to use with good workflow, the UI is terrific, our customers love it and it does exactly what we want. Except ... in only a few weeks' use, we've encountered significant bugs including an error totalling invoices on the dashboard. To our surprise, the response from support has been that, “we are in the process of working on several other things that are affecting a number of accounts, I am sorry to say, this issue might not get resolved any time soon.” The response on an error in contact records was much the same.
Bugs happen and I'd be relaxed if the issue was being addressed with urgency but the impression given is of a company taking a leisurely approach to what sounds like an extensive list of bugs. The 'maybe some day' response is very poor and makes FreshBooks a dubious proposition. There's not much point in having an accounting system that can't even add up!

I like the platform for my business easy to use and gets the job done sending invoices directly to email. Only thing I would change is I wish there was a feature the I could click to tick off invoices that were not paid through freshbooks, seems ovi. Would even be better if I could print a summary of all invoices for the year to help with taxes.
