There are an awful lot of negative reviews of this system. I agree with those who say that it is very good-when it works. That is true because it is very comprehensive mine operates security, lights, HVAC, TV and stereo, locks and shades. This means that there are many pieces that can go bad. The worst part about that is that Control4 is a completely opaque system in terms of pricing. They care more about protecting their dealers than their consumers. I was quoted a price of over $1,000 to install a simple WiFi extender. You can’t really do anything yourself and you can’t verify if you are being charged fairly for the obscure equipment that works with the Contol4 system. There are other options out there that are much more consumer friendly and I would suggest looking at those first.

I am a senior citizen and have lived at my current address for 5 years which has a Control4 system (2). I have had five years of frustration with service dealer having to come out every six months or so because the system stops working. Most recently I was told the two Control 4 boxes were corrupted so I purchased 2 online and was then told by dealer that software couldn't be downloaded.
Every service call costs me $300 plus and now I'm being told I need to spend $3000 to update the system. All we use the system for is for a TV on the main and lower floor and to turn on the fireplace on the lower floor. It has both DVD and VCR capabilities but we never use it.
Doesn't Control 4 have an obligation to deliver a level of service/support for its existing systems without blackmailing you into updating to a newer system at a significant cost. The consumer (me) is uncertain of the companies past and current products, why would we invest when the current track record isn't so good..

we inherited a control 4 system with a home we purchased and are very frustrated with it. It is very dealer dependent system which is expensive to maintain and complicated to learn. I would like to be able to just plug in a TV and watch it rather than go through whole integration with the system. Can I do that?

I have found the Control 4 handset to be fickle and unreliable. There was an acknowledged fault with the backs of the handsets not properly fitting the charging cradles. I have had an expensive and frustrating time trying to get these handsets to work properly. They now seem to be working OK but I fear they seem fragile. I could not recommend them.

Please don’t waste your time and money on Control4. It was recommended to us to control landscape lighting. The technician convinced us to put all our audiovisual on control4, as well. Big mistake. It may work for a month then it doesn’t. Whenever we lose power the control4 stops working. WiHome Integration, our installer whose technicians are not well educated on the system, claims that’s impossible, but it’s happened every time, even if we lose power for a few seconds. The last time our control4 went out the technician came to fix the problem. I didn’t test the landscape lights before he left that were all working before he came. One third of them do not turn on and they’re convinced it’s not their problem but an electrical issue. What a coincidence. Trying out a new control4 service company tomorrow but may cut my losses and go with a more reliable system.

I spent over $20,000 on our system and a year later got a notice my license for the mobile app was going to expire and they want $100 dollars a year for their smart home system to work with my mobile device. I don't know how you could market a smart home that didn't work with a mobile device but apparently Control4 thinks they should be able to charge an annual fee to make it so. 1 star for being ridiculously greedy in their business approach. Never again!

I love the system, but it is overly difficult to organize playlists. I would hope that one would be able to move and reorder songs once they are moved to a playlist (like one can in iTunes) but that is not the case.

I'm frustrated because we've not had TV for one and one-half weeks and the dealer/integrator isn't responding. This happens regularly. Probably once or twice per year. Hence, this seemed like a good time to let everyone know my experience with Control4.
We had five touch screen control pads installed. Three have failed. I believe Control4 should replace poor quality product for free (or at least heavily discount replacement product). They won't. They want us to buy new controllers. Controllers cost $1,000 per unit.
The Zigbee/RF remote controls are awful. Their solution for improving performance is to buy more Zigbee light switches at $125 per switch. We tried that. It didn't help.
Their I/O extender also failed. That only cost about $300. Nevertheless, it's an inconvenience to have the system down and to schedule the work.
Then there's the programming. They advertise it's so easy even end users can program their equipment. I opted not to buy a Windows PC just so I could program their equipment. Instead, I asked the integrator we used to do the programming. Unfortunately, they can't get it to work. The shades will open, but not close. That's not what I call "automation."
For the icing on the cake, they did a firmware upgrade. The firmware upgrade stopped the two door stations (doorbell with camera) we bought from working.
In summary, Control4 is expensive, has product quality problems and requires constant maintenance by professional installers. When the installers are busy with bigger revenue opportunities (like new installs), you have no recourse.
This system is not worth the money. Find a different solution.

The remote works very well and I have had zero issues. The app is a bit more dodgy and sometimes has difficulty "finding" the wifi connection. I would look into why this is so hit or miss on the wifi.

We continue to experience problems with remote controls not functioning and losing the ability to control or reconnect with features or services. Not sure if it is truly a Control4 issue or a network issue, but our service tech keeps saying it should be working correctly, but it still does not. We have not been losing any network connectivity (our phone and computers work just fine), so I don't think it is a network issue. It's been frustrating. When it's working, it works great, though!!

When it works it’s “ok.” Invariably, something fails and it needs to be rebooted whether system wide or in an isolated room.
Looking back, I’d never have wasted the time or money to go through such problems and the teething was the worst. On top, you have to pay a monthly service fee. “If” it can get sorted remotely is lucky, mine always required a service call and only on week days. It’s been three years and I can confidently say, if you are slightly technical, as I am, then I have learned to reset and isolate problems. This is a far cry from a turn-key solution. Are there better solutions out there? Most definitely! I will wait it out and then move over to a different solution that doesn’t require so much communication over multiple platforms. Technology is fiddly to say the least and not for the faint hearted. A turn key solution is best and this is anything but. I could go on and on and dive into technological specifics, but I think you get the idea that I’m not sold on this system by any means.

We have had no issues with the Control4. It has worked flawlessly. The only concern is that the control box runs very hot. It has not impacted how the unit works thus far but would think that it could shorten the life of the unit. It is almost at starting fire temperature. I have been told this is normal.

Control 4 is way too large and takes up excessive space for activities being controlled. The unit makes extreme noise and nearly destroys use of the room in which it is located. If a fan is needed for cooling a much better design is required!!!!!!!!

I acquired a home with Conrol4 already installed. I am not a fan of it for anything besides music. I admit that I have never had a “Universal Remote” that I ever liked. I figure the big electronics don’t just make up a willy nilly remote, and that they actually put design thought into them. Having said that, I pulled Control4 off of 5 TV’s and installed Roku devices. I’m much happier. However, my dealer all but refuses to take it off of the main TV by telling me “It’s a good system,” yet I can never seem to get what I want on the TV without a lot of hassle. I’d much rather have a Sonos system on the main TV, and it’s Samsung remote to access it’s Smart TV features. Control4 noticeably lacks a voice search capability to find a TV show available on Apple TV and Roku.
Music through the whole house is great. It ties in nicely with most streaming services. I have Pandora, Spotify, and Sirius XM all streaming via the iPad controller in the house. However, if I get a phone call, there is no quick and easy way to mute the system without taking the time for my iOS device to connect to the controller, pull up the music menu screen and wait for the Pause icon to appear. I have to either let the caller hear my music or miss a cell call by the fourth ring. It needs to integrate with Amazon Echo devices so I can pause the system by saying, “Alexa Stop.”
I am awaiting a doorbell from Control4 that should act like a Ring Elite. It’s taken forever to get. I keep being assured that my cameras can be connected to the Control4 system. It’s been six months that I’ve waited for something to happen at the front door or to get video surveillance. I am now a trained flea and continue that my next appointment will produce my desired results.
I control the rest of the house through separate Apps like Nest, Insteon, Alula, and Pentair’s Screen Logic. I am glad these are not integrated and I control them with my certified contractor, pool guy, and alarm company.

The initial setup is great but to have to go through a dealer to do simple modifications is ridiculous. The setup and hardware cost is expensive and to have to pay again to add components as your system changes is, in my opinion, asking too much. I wouldn't have purchased knowing all of this upfront. Take a page out of Logitech's book. People getting these remotes are not stupid. They can figure out how to do it or give them an option to pay for the added setup service if they wish.
