After an aged Briggs and Stratton lawn mower with the Milwaukee-made engine, which seemed largely indestructible, I expected this would be an advance, especially since Mountford is a respected firm. More correctly, looking at the reviews here, was a respected firm would be more accurate since those days are long gone. Shockingly made in Slovakia, it has been even worse quality than the Chinese-made junk from Homebase l use at our allotment.
The RS100 we have has an overhead valve engine end is surprisingly fuel-efficient.
I mention that first since that's the only good feature: everything else is absolutely vile, third-world quality, ranging from poor castings, a carburettor that's more reminiscent of drip feed, cotton wool contrivance used on the very first cars, to a drive system that is inherently flawed in its design and then dreadfully executed. It is astonishing that it conveys drive at all, then add damp cut grass to the rim drive mechanism within the wheel, and it doesn't work for long. The plastic base, rust-free so good in theory, feels fragile and brittle. l am reasonably competent mechanically, otherwise it would have been recycled a long time ago. When it eventually goes into a skip, throwing it there will be very rewarding.
If it was a cheap, throw-away product I might be a little bit more forgiving, but this masquerades as a quality product from a reputable firm. Avoid.

Purchased a Mountfield lawnmower on 11/4/20, used twice and the self propelled function stopped working, contacted Stiga Limited who were totally disinterested and claimed that the fault was not covered by warranty.
Dreadful product and dreadful customer service, would never buy a product from them again.

Have just bought a new Mountfield lawnmower and asked the man who serviced my old one if he wanted it for parts (which was an empress 16".) I got the instructions out to give to him with it to discover we had bought it on 3/7/1990, nearly 30 years ago. For the past 6-7 years I have had it serviced but hadn't had a problem with it before then and only got it serviced as it was chugging a bit.
If this one lasts that long it will outlast me.
Used the new one last Saturday and I have problems with my shoulder so my son usually cuts the grass but this one was so easy to start will now be able to do it myself and won't have to wait for him to call and do it

I bought a Mountfield mower a few years back having been impressed by the 5 year warranty. As mentioned in other reviews, buyers need to be very aware of the T&Cs of the warranty. You need to get it "serviced" every year - over 5 years, this adds up to more than the cost of the mower! I only discovered this after purchase. Bearing in mind that I have a smallish garden and I only use the mower for about 6 or 7 hours a year, the service obligation is over the top (basically an oil & filter change and check on cable tensions etc as far as I can make out). I have not done the annual service because I worked out that it is cheaper to service every few years and pay for repairs. I feel quite mis-lead and duped by the "5 year warranty" that they use as a sales push. The mower has been OK other than a snapped cable to the drive clutch (£40 repair in year 2). Another negative is that the rubber on the wheels is very soft and is breaking up. When I bought the machine, I was attracted to the fact that it had a "deck wash" connection so that you can connect a hose to the mower to clean it. There were no instructions about how to use the wash, so I asked the dealer who basically said "don't bother it will make it rust". I contacted Mountfield by email to ask the same, but no reply, even after chasing them up - disappointing so I have never used this "feature". The flap that indicates the bin is full also does not work (never has - since day one). On a positive note, it has always been easy to start and does not burn oil (maybe because it is a Honda engine - a friend advised me to always get a Honda engine because they are the best - looks like he was right about that). Five stars for Honda!

Dreadful product and service. Bought a very expensive ride on mower that was delivered on a pallet, via Screwfix, and didn’t work, it was allegedly built to order, yet had an old receipt inside the packaging. Getting a reasonable response from Mountfield was almost impossible, they were incredibly uncooperative and arrogant. My advise is to stay well clear of these dreadful products and purchase from a more reliable company.

This is a follow up of a previous review I made nearly two years ago. My 827H mower was delivered new with a charging fault which made the mower almost unusable. After a protracted conversation with Mountfield and the local agent they eventually fitted a new engine. Since then the mower has operated perfectly, starts first crank, no problems at all. Would I recommend, yes, have I recommended, yes one went on to purchase a Mountfield mower.
Two years ago I was a very unhappy customer, good customer service won the day.

I’ve persevered with my Mountfield SP454 for the last five years now. It’s always been problematic. The cut is poor quality, the pick up for the grass collector is bad and it often leaves trails of grass. Each year the starting is getting more difficult and the annual service cost is driving me mad. For the amount of money spent on this I could have bought an Allett or an Ego.... and that is what I’ve decided to do. Mountfield mower.... bye dude.

I had a previous Mountfield that I bought 2nd hand and it was quite superb. However when it finally died , I bought a new one but sadly now a very different experience. Clearly making in China and bringing over here a disaster. Had more problems with batteries, gears and cutting blade engagement than care to mention. Already on 2nd replacement machine and same problems exist. Avoid at all costs ( has cost me a lot in servicing and fixing!!)

I bought a new MP84 ride on mower 3 months ago and would not recommend this model to anyone. Whilst I'm sure it performs as it should, it is difficult to operate smoothly and safely.
- Gears are snatchy, leading to jerky operation.
- Manoeuvring in confined spaces is very difficult
- Clutch action is difficult to master, even after 3 months of regular operation
- Selection of neutral is difficult
- Selection of parking brake often difficult
- 'Safety' features make it ridiculously difficult to carry out a simple mowing task: dismounting to pick up a stone or obstacle means the engine stops. To restart, 3 actions need to be carried out (cutters off, parking brake on, neutral selected and of course you need to be seated).
- A 'permission' button needs to be held in to reverse. If you don't the engine stops.
- You reverse to the compost heap to dump grass cuttings. In using the lever to empty the collector, it covers the gear lever, making it difficult to select a forward gear to move away.
I sincerely wish I hadn't bought this mower, and there's nothing I can do about it.

It is so unfortunate that this once high quality company now just sub-contracts badged imports. The reason we went to Mountfield is due to their good quality in the past and also because our local service company has a bad reputation. After ordering, it turned out Mountfield sub-contract this local company we were avoiding due to bad reputation. Anyway, it's done now so let's see how it is... First issue was upon delivery, the guy turned up and said ''sorry I am in a rush as I am going to Greece today'' (great start), I said ''before you go, can I start it to see if there is any issues or advice I might need first'', well it didn't start, he opened the back and hit the ignition relay with a screwdriver, then it started. I should have denied delivery then and there. But I gave the benefit of doubt as it started second time (after hitting with a screwdriver). I must add that we called them and offered to sell our old Al-KO (a much better machine) at a great price, which they said it isn't worth having, but we will take it off your hands for free, only to see it outside theire door a few days later on sale for over £1000. An hour after delivery of our NEW machine, we are on the phone (to white glove company) as smoke is kicking out of the engine very heavily. They said ''your not sitting on the seat hard enough'' that's all. Well after checking this and having 3 people on at the same time, it still kept creating LOTS of smoke, let's just say that the neighbours were not impressed. After trial and error from the ''white glove'' companies bad advise, it actually turned out that they had put several litres too much oil in and it was overflowing over the engine causing smoke. No apologies or anything, although after calling Mountfield they said '' did you not get a oil syringe in the box'' I said ''What box? The guy turned up with the lawnmower just on a trailer, no box'' . So they sent us a oil syringe, I was thankful, but wished I didn't have to undo their incorrect work as the paying customer. By the end of the month, we got some post... it was a bill from the local white glove service for the lawnmower (which we had already paid for upon ordering). The sub-contracted business tried to charge us again for Mountfields product that we had already paid for, but they delivered. It seems this is quite common after speaking to locals who have used them also before, hence their bad reputation. We are now still with this lawnmower and have had nothing but problems, the gear changing is so terrible, I spent 10 minutes in one spot just trying to get neutral to engage. Very poor quality products and white glove service, it's such a shame when Mountfield had such a great reputation in the past. They have sold themselves into bad quality badged imported goods with high profit margins, instead of maintaining the high quality products and service that they used to offer to their customers... Unfortunately this experience means that I will never use Mountfield in future due to their ''white glove service'' companies terrible work and bad quality of the product supplied. #embarrassing

Bought a new SP180 lawnmower with self propelled wheels. Started the machine up no power to wheels. Spoke to supplier they advised take it to a Mountfield registered service shop. By the way, problem not covered by warranty, Mountfield did not want to know!!!!
The lawnmower made in Slovakia, the machines are inspected before being sold on in Britain, apparently. My Brand New Machine spent the first week in a repair shop. Now an inspection of the machine would surely bring to somebodies attention that the wheels do not work!
Bought a new lawnmower and then had to pay another £30.60 to get it working.
All I got from Mountfield was not covered under warranty!!!
Absolutely disappointed with Mountfield and if I had the option to start again I would not go near this company.

1530H ride on. Had this a year. Hardly used in 2018 as grass not growing in hot weather. So total use about 20 times. Annoying little problems. Intermittent issue with warning bleeper for collected grass level. The bag doesn't reconnect properly after being emptied without hopping off & pushing it in. The collection bag is made of rather feeble material so if you hit a stick it makes a hole. Handbrake appears not to work.
More significantly, developed a strange rattle. One of the blades had come adrift. The problem was with a very feeble cast blade mounting boss where the lugs to position the blade had sheared off. There is supposed to be a warranty but apparently doesn't cover sending out a replacement part; you have to get involved with getting the machine or part back to the original supplier. Anyway, expressed my frustration to Mountfield through their online contact form. Message displayed that I would hear back within 24 hours. That was a week ago.
Meanwhile the battery seems to have died requiring charging each time before use.
Extras strike me as being a rip-off. I needed the tow hitch. Cheapest offer was around £60. I thought I must be missing something so best get the manufacturer part rather than using a piece of angle iron. What you get is ... A short length of iron channel with a welded short connection, plus a few bolts. OK, sprayed nicely with black paint. But this really is taking the proverbial.
It's so frustrating. Engine, hydrostatic drive, steering (remarkably light & precise) all excellent. The basic design concept is good. The problems are with quality & customer service - issues that should be easily fixable.

I purchased a mountfield hedge cutter last year model MHJ2424 it worked ok for the first few cuts then started cutting out under pressure customer services then advised it needed a carburettor adjustment (a simple process if you have the specialised tool for the job) they advised taking it to a local centre(20mins away) who was very good and solved the problem but was warned of possible recurring problem 3 times so far try to contact mountfield through online chat left holding for 20 mins and gave in surely the tool for adjusting should come with cutter no such look can be bought for about £15 as this is under warranty I will be returning it nowhere does mountfield warn of this issue when purchasing so sadly I would recommend to stay clear of this hedge cutter

Having spent £600 on a Mountfield SP555V in March 2019, initially I thought this premium machine was a good fit for my lawn cutting needs. However in May I struck a hidden object in some longer grass and the blade became loose and the machine stopped cutting. I took it back to the dealer in Stockport I purchased it from. They advised that the damage caused by the blade strike had bent the crank shaft and because it is a Honda engine that parts were difficult to get hold of and expensive and I might as well buy a new machine. Whilst they tightened the blade and declared the machine safe, increased vibration will cause longer term damage. I decided to speak to Mountfield about this diagnosis and they confirmed that whilst the machine did have a self protection system it was not full proof and advised much the same as the dealer. What a huge disappointment and waste of money and must question whether this machine is fit for purpose. It is said to be a machine for the professional market, clearly only of use if it doesn't hit anything other than grass !

What an outstanding company!
I have had my experience of poor customer service and this company has gone above and beyond for me. I noticed that Screwfix had a sale on their ride on lawnmowers, however, I hadn't factored in the way the lawnmower would arrive for the saving in cost.
Looking at previous reviews it seems people need to do a little more research before making a purchase. Of course, if you are seeing a product for £200 less than everywhere else, the service is likely to be different. Myself included, next time I would ensure it was purchased directly to have it pre-assembled and checked.
I didn't even know how to use the damn thing
I spoke with Josh who was an excellent member of staff and couldn't have done more to help. I must have been on the phone for over an hour.
Thank you Mountfield

Bought my lawnmower from Screwfix, the machine in fairness was outside of the warranty and I wasn't expecting any help from Mountfield. To my surprised I managed to speak with Josh and he has arranged to send me a battery due to the failure of mine. He was polite and helpful on the phone and I couldn't have asked for more. Really happy with the mower and service

I purchased a ride-on Moutfield mower from Screwfix sometime ago.It was delivered on a pallet which was a struggle but eventually managed to unpack it.however it would not start.I rang customer services who gave me the details of 2 mountfield agents.I phoned both 1 said he was too far away to help and the closer one flatly refused to help and said it was people like me who were putting people like him out of business by shopping on line.On calling Mountfield again and spoke to a so called manager who advised that there agents were under no obligation to carry out warranty. The manager called Josh didn't seem bothered at all that I had purchased an expensive item which simply did not work.To their credit Srewfix arranged for the item to be picked up and a full refund given plus a gesture for inconvenience.Suffice it to say Ibought a different machine locally from a local business. The moral is don't expect customer service from Mountfield as you will be disappointed.

Just purchased a new mower
Inside was a leaflet offering free lawn analysis and treatment (no expiry date)
Called to arrange and told it expired in October 2018, 6 months ago!
Unbelievable service and that the leaflet was even still in the box!!!

I bought my Mountfield first mower around 20 years ago, a brilliant machine which gave excellent service.
My new machine the SP555V has been fantastic, the odd consumable has needed to be replaced over the past 3 years but nothing out of the ordinary. 1 blade boss and 1 belt, not bad going for a machine doing 3 cuts a week.
I have had excellent service from the contact centre at Mountfield on several occasions, going above and beyond to locate parts and places I can purchase them for me. Overall a really great experience.

Bought my new mower from B&Q, very happy with it initially, easy to set up good starter however the frame as well as the powder coated metal was faulty.
After sending images to the "customer service" their manager replied with a very rude tone, although they advertised a 3 year warranty as this was plastered all over the box it's a conditional warranty which you only find out when you open the product!!
They would not accept I was miss sold this despite their further information about the included £20 mulching plug which is just unbelievably poor quality, despite this they make it impossible for you to know the warranty is conditional.
This is a blatant trading standard issue and one I will be taking up with the ombudsmen.
Although I was offered a replacement handle as it's completely unacceptable, warped and welds sticking out which damaged the powder coated frame, the attitude of their customer service manager is absolutely disgraceful.
Never have I come accross someone so blatantly ignorant of the consumer rights act which governs all sales it's simply mind boggling.
Stay well clear of this brand as if you want customer service you will not find it here.
I will however ensure that all correspondence between us is shown for all to see the attitude of the customer service manager.
He requires training in consumer law and a customers statutory rights.
If you look at the reviews my complaint is a common one, although they do have a good rating as the product is good, they are let down by an atrocious arrogant and misinformed manager.
Stay clear, do not buy from this company!!!!
Stay posted as all communication will be posted!, you can see how poor the customer service is for yourself!!
Update ☆☆☆see below☆☆☆
Mountfields manager basically robbed me off and dezpite me having images with their 3 year warranty plastered all over the box they point blank refuse to accept this so you get a limited 2 year warranty subject to you having to jump through so many hoops you may as well have no warranty at all, further to this the staff at B&Q Old Swan Liverpool would not take the item back as it's not a mower they stock and "we would have to arrange to have this returned to a store where it was bought, 30 minutes away!! The manager at this old Swan store should hang his head in shame as when we got to the Aintree branch we could not have been treated better, refunded straight away, super friendly staff who were shocked we had gone through what we had, one B&Q who state they can't return the item their as it produces more work for them!! What if we had bought this 50 miles away!!!!
Mountfields manager is an absolutely diabolical manager and I have no issues posting his replies to my genuine requests for help as despite the warranty issue the mower was faulty!!!!
This will be taken as far as it possibly can.
☆☆☆☆update☆☆☆
This is the reply from the boss at Mountfield after admitting they had supplied a faulty mower yet despite drawing your attention to a so called £20 piece of flimsy plastic, the box makes no mention of a conditional warranty, I will now take this issue to the ombudsmen but be warned tjis is the reply from the boss!!
"Dear Mr Hague
I have been fully made aware of your complaint and read all correspondence between you and our customer servicemanager Joshua Williams.
I believe it was made clear in the emails where the warranty was located and made clear inside the box on your registration literature. The mower does benefit from a 3 year warranty subject to the service requirement of the machine.
I fully support the comments that Joshua made to yourself and your consumer rights are between yourself and place of purchased. In this case B&Q.
We will not be extending your 2 year warranty to a 3 year warranty without the terms being met.
Stigma Ltd, will enter into no further discussion surrounding your 3 year warranty.
You have returned your product to the store for a full refund. Any further correspondence will receive no reply.
Duncan Martin
Managing Director
Stiga Ltd"
(spelling errors are numerous through all communications we had!!)
If this is how they treat someone with a genuine fault and grievance over miss selling a clearly missleading warranty then I suggest you avoid them at all costs.
This will not rest here and I will report them to trading standards.
