xlibris needs to have only one book consultant who overall hands you off to each of the sub-managers. When my book was handed to the next no one directed me nor did they check to see if I had completed all steps necessary to achieve a good finished product. It turned into a nightmare I hope I never have to repeat. It caused delays and mis-understandings from dept to dept. Overall it was not handled well and it was not a pleasant experience.

Everyone I have encountered at Xlibris has been a professional and very helpful. It has been a pleasure getting this book ready for publishing. Rafi, Jane and Lani are first-rate.

This is my first-time being published. I realised that getting accepted by a publisher who would take me on without investment on my part was unrealistic so I decided to go on the self-publishing route. I do not regret this for several reasons. The team have been excellent in following up on how things are going. In fact, because my illustrator took a lot longer than expected to finish the illustrations it was a full 2-3 years from start to finish. However, as soon as he completed I sent the materials in as requested and the book was published within two days. Shortly afterwards - a matter of days - I could find my book on Amazon sites throughout the world. The book finish is very attractive. When I received the first draft back I wanted a change from the chapter heading style. They were wonderful. The title is Quest for the Golden Orchid. They produced a golden orchid image for me.
Another boon from being self-published with Xlibris is that I keep the copyright and also receive 25% of sales unless ordered directly from Xlibris, in which case it would be 10%!
In short, I am very happy with my book and my publisher and I am already making progress in selling.

The overall experience was a positive one. For the most part they were informative and answered questions. I wish they were a bit more hands on because often I found myself with questions I had no idea needed to be asked until much later in the process. Their financial dept. act more that a little 'robotic' and the promotional materials took quite some time even being rushed. But those are the only complaints. I am sure now I've broken in the process it will be far less irksome as I was more than a little impatient. This was my first time publishing a book ever and was clueless and a bit- terrified lol.

Overall, the end product was wonderful. Most of the people I dealt with were very helpful. However, one person (and I shall not mention names) was almost always unavailable and had a "negative edge" to them which I did not appreciate. They were curt, cold, and stand-ofish which made it hard to tolerate working with them. We did get through it though and for that I'm happy. If not for them, I would offer five stars instead off four.

I have published three books with Xlibris. I have been very happy with their kindness, patience, Knowledge, talented illustrators, etc. up until I got involved with the marketing aspect of the company. As things progressed, I found that the their marketing plan was very mediocre for the amount of money they were charging me. So I cancelled and the finance dept. told me I was to receive a refund. No matter how many times I call or email, there is always an excuse as to why I have no refund after three weeks. So dissatisfied, however, I will continue to self-publish with them because that part of the company I am satisfied with. Find other ways to market your book.

They allow you to control your manuscript
A manuscript ,especially that of poetry allows one into a very personal space
They not only just get a manuscript but also a piece of the authors soul
It is an issue of trusting them with what you have created but it hopefully will be them that delivers it to the world
Xlibris exceeded my expectations

I have just published my second book, the first with Xlibris. I have read the reviews here and on other sites, and they seem to break down to three issues:
1. Some authors have unrealistic expectations of success. My advice is that self publishing is largely a hobby. Do it for your own satisfaction and do not expect to be one of the few who makes any money, especially if you buy into their marketing programs
2. The competence and understanding of their Philippines based staff is very variable. You have to get lucky. My books are rather academic and they do well on some things (copy editing excellent, index creation awful). Many of their staff are doing their job by rote and do not have the experience to understand broader issues
3. The selling of "marketing" programs. They are laughable. I have been corresponding with "Charles" who want me to spend $4000 for a one hour book signing at the Miami Book Fair, which requires flying 1,800 miles each way and spending two nights in a hotel. For this I get 75 books to sign and give away while I chat to book lovers. The problem are that it would require to me sign a book and chat once every 48 seconds to get through my 75 books and then sell 1,500 books just to break even. This by the way is a book on ENGLISH Medieval History. Then I have to back the guy off from calling my office several times a day. No, they don't think anything through, they just through stuff against the wall and hope that something sticks.
The wonder tho is not that they offer these naive and poorly thought out programs but that people actually buy them! Do the math, folks.
The real weakness in the process is the caliber of the Submission Managers who steer the book through the process. You cannot talk directly to the designer or indexers and you have to get lucky to get a good communicator.. They have gaps in their QC also. They published my eBook without having me review it at all and half the illustration links were wrong and they had to withdraw and resubmit it.
If you work with this type of company you need to do your homework, do your math, stay on top of it and absolutely do not count on making money.

My experience with Xlibris has been rewarding, professional and very satisfying. Much more so than I ever imagined publishing would be! I love that I have a personal consultant that stays in touch and answers all my questions. My first book is out in print and it looks great! I am now in the process of having my second book published with Xlibris.

I am very happy with the final product. However, I do not like the pushy sales personnel for the marketing area. They act like I am made of money when they promote their book signing marketing. I think that $4,500 for one hour of book signing is outrageous. I drive two plus hours to a location and only get one hour of book signing. I may be looney, but not that looney.
