The value of stories in learning is undeniable and this is the case with the Frog Family, which is well suited for an EFL class of small kids. The characters are just lovely and familiar to young learners. The plot is simple for them to follow easily. The pictures are motivating. The resources, such as text fragments to stick on the back of each picture, make this story easy for the teacher to use in class. I've decided to try it with my grandchildren and I'd like to invite other teachers to do the same. I'm sure it will be an enjoyable experience.

I am so impressed with the quality, quantity and ease of access that is provided in this product. I am very excited about using it this year in my daily lesson as an incentive to get the tardy students to arrive on time during first period, and adapting it to coincide with whatever vocab or syntax I am teaching for the week. I especially like that students are engaged in co creating games.
I have never seen an aide so thoughtfully constructed and a vendor so willing to engage.

"Fun ESL Role-Plays and Skits for Children" Shelley Ann Vernon
ESL means English for students as a second or even third or fourth language.
Aim of the book: To introduce drama into the English language learning environment . The book concentrates on the practical aspect of this . It shows how drama can help to teach language, language chunks by using English language in its context.
Language skill: Mainly speaking but for older learners could be used to develop reading skills.
Other skills that learners develop: expression and movement.
Contents Table: Good, well organized.
Language summary: clear layout, practical for teachers to select the play which is the most appropriate for the aspect of language they wish to teach.
Introduction: nice introduction with a Chinese proverb: " tell me and I will forget, show me and I will remember, involve me and I will understand". Answers the question: why drama in the classroom?.
My own experience : I agree with the author that the English language has to be fun in order to motivate children to want to speak, write, read and listen to English. This idea of using drama to teach really works: I saw children playing train drivers , not wanting to get up in the morning etc in English just loving this and speaking and playing in English and enjoying it. I have seen children pronouncing whole sentences easily in English because they can relate perfectly to the situation. For example, in the play about getting up the children love playing the daddy who is mad that his child doesn't want to get up.
How to use these plays: this part of the book gives practical tips to teachers how to put the plays into practice and to prepare for them. The preparation for the plays involves using games as warm ups before the children actually act out the play. These plays which are designed for 6-12 year olds can be adapted to be used with teens and early learners with the language being graded higher or lower according to the group of learners.
References to other authors: Good references to other authors for example, Spolin who was involved in the theatre.
Other resources: There are complementary games that are not in the book, though some are given. These have to be purchased in a separate games book that the author has written.
Videos: There is a good practical link to videos of the games that have been acted out by children . This is great for the teacher but also for the children.
About the Author: Shelley Vernon is a fully qualified and experienced language teacher with the skills and the teaching capacity to transmit her experience to others. Her teaching methods are very interesting and have practical results. She is also very kind and helps teachers who ask her advice. This was my case as a newly qualified teacher, her practical advice as regards to how to teach children was very helpful.

I just purchased and downloaded Shelley Vernon’s flash cards. I got so excited printing them! They sparked the creativity in me and I spent the hours printing them dreaming of all kinds of ways to use them. They are terrific! Beautiful drawings, very child-centered, though I know I will be using them with adults as well. Thank you Shelly for the joy you have added to my teaching with your wonderful materials.

Teaching has never been so much easier as well as exciting. I started using the system last week and I'm already seeing big changes in my classes. I used some of the flashcards to facilitate my class on a book lesson. I then applied some very simple games and by the time we read that book, that kids were able to participate excitedly. I have to say that this is the best decision I've made in a very long time. My life is a lot simpler now!

This book is an incredible resource, and the author is extremely helpful and supportive in email communication.
I previously felt very stressed about how to make my lessons more fun and engaging for young learners, having no formal training on teaching children. I've found these games and the 40 or so pages of advice on pedagogy and classroom management at the beginning of the book to be invaluable in raising my confidence and understanding how to relate to kids in the classroom. I recommend the latest illustrated digital edition in PDF, as the links between the content/index and individual games are a dream. Thank you, Shelley! :)
