They take no responsibility even when there is MASSIVE information available to them.
They sound so "safe". Yes, for opportunists, profiteers and those who know they'll never have anyone taking them to court for flagrantly violating local laws regarding roommate/share situations.
SURE -- they used to "advise" their advertisers to check local laws.
No mention that under FEDERAL law, Flatshare Ltd, of Manchester, UK, which OWNS the Spare Room web site is fully responsible for falsehoods placed on their site, and the FTC, which enforces FCC regulations, can take the site down in a heartbeat.
They let people register just to trawl the waters for people in need in the worst housing market in US history -- then say "Oh, so sorry...we have no jurisdiction over people like that, but please keep us informed..." right into the circular file.
And those profiteers (profiteering -- a federal felony, go look it up, it falls under the RICO statutes) who've been breaking local "roommate" laws for years, and years and years -- easy to track them...but "we have no way of...." blah, blah, blah...a load of H.S.
You find the lies in the ads...they say "we have no access to the ads." (HUH?? I found one in 3 minutes, several months after it was posted -- while someone was still living there and it even said "available: now".
Keep copies of EVERYTHING on Spare Room. You will need it in court.
Take your chances. Be firm. Remember, opportunists and profiteers don't care about the LAW -- they know you're desperate and will take you for all you're worth.
The "moderators" give you a load of hooey. "Keep us posted." (reply no. 4 on their list)
They don't know that OUR federal agencies consider EVERYTHING POSTED ON THEIR WEB SITE IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY, AS ARE ALL CRIMES COMMITTED USING THEIR WEB SITE.
Do not fall for their B.S.
Yes, they have JUST RECENTLY added a great deal of cautionary verbiage lately -- now that they know they're about to answer to the U.S. Attorney General, a state Attorney General, and a local District Attorney.
But they're just another commercial enterprise that thinks an ocean absolves them of any culpability.
It does not.
Know your laws backward and forward.
"Just an advertising platform," they say. Really??? They are a commercial enterprise in one of England's most corrupt cities. (Manchester is second only to the London Metropolitan police force.)
Our country dealt with ADVERTISING in the 1960s. Of course, these guys weren't even born then.
Go into this venture well armed.

5 years ago from this website I found very nice big room, good location with great roommate for moving from Long Island to Queens and today again thanks to this web I found a roommate sharing the same apartment.
And the fee for posting the ad is not only affordable but also effective.

So all the recent reviewers just happened to only have 1 Star under their belt? Makes sense. SpareRoom is not a great site. Every inquiry was a profile that just happened to not read details of ad I posted? Hmmm, how convenient then for a false account then. They either didn't know what they wanted to do, asked to move in with another, despite my ad saying No couples, wanted to move in a month after available date or marked Interested but for a budget well below asking. What are the chances ? Yet every Craigslist Inquiry was someone who actually read and wanted to move in as soon as they could. They just happened to know what they wanted. Doubt this sites prospects are true profiles rather paid accounts or even employees posing as false interest to keep traffic up.

I just agreed to rent a room to a young man whom I found through the site. Hope it will go well. I see that users can filter for: Gender; age; whether someone works or goes to school; sexual preference; smoking/non-smoking; neighborhood, etc. I think there should be one other option (frankly): Race. Yeah, I know....not politically correct But I saw candidates come up and they were clearly startled that our races differed. Some people might not care if they had a purple roommate; others do care - they want their own race. Please put in a filter for that.

Spare room don't care when you get ripped off by one of their paying clients. This company needs regulating and there should be some sort of protection to the person renting the property. Avoid these jokers

I came across SpareRoom while browsing other room rental websites on the internet. I was looking for rentals to fit my criteria and found one that seemed to meet all my needs. I messaged the advertisement & received a fast response. Talked with the person placing the ad & we felt we found a good match! I would highly recommend SpareRoom to all my family & friends! Thank you SpareRoom!

It took awhile to find a room because I started my search about a month and a half before my desired move-in date. But finding bedroom options and contacting the landlords/roommates was really easy. My future roommate contacted me after seeing my ad and we hit it off when she was giving me the tour.

It was frustrating to not receive replies to my ad, but eventually, all four rooms were rented. I do not hesitate to recommend the service and will use it again!

I wanted a place in Venice or close to the beach,it finally happened, took almost 2 months 5 interviews many viewings. I got a great apartment in Marina Del Rey and I'm very compatible with my new Roommate. My scope of area was limited, my age 60 limited me from many adverts, mostly by younger owner/landlords, I had a good experience with Bungalow properties listed on Roomshare. All the people I met landlords/owners courteous friendly welcoming. The place Im moving out of owner is going to list house with Roomshare.. Highly recommend, Stuart Thomas Norman
