Sigalert is a great website to check for major traffic problems in your area before you head out. In my area (Southern California), they show traffic accidents, construction sites, police activity, and so forth when it's occurring as well as the suspected backup. I used to think Sigalert was a five star website, but lately their information has been less helpful and I wish they would revert to their old ways.
Most of the time it takes 20-30 minutes for new incidents to appear. This is compared to the old appear time of 5-8 minutes. This means if you check traffic before you leave and just missed something, you'll get stuck in traffic. This is important to me because I don't have GPS or any type of way to check traffic while I'm in my car. Also, the amount of inaccurate information that the website now shows is concerning. In the past, if there was an accident, it would show the details, like whether there was a roll over, whether there was an ambulance on the scene, etc. Now it shows only basic information and which lane is blocked (if any). Additionally the construction sites and list of "closed exits" seems to be always out of date.
I still use Sigalert because it's better than the alternatives in my area, and it's free. I just wish that they would revert back to their old ways.
