Given that Mobicip ‘is’ the service they provide, my review will focus on my experience of their web filtering product when installed on an android phone.
Whilst things have definitely gotten better with the December update, the android app & web portal still need some work.
Whole device VPN protection when it works, works really well. Still got some connectivity issues whereby my phone seems to struggle to activate a connection & the only reliable way to re-establish a connection is to restart the phone. This seems to particularly impact messaging apps such as WhatsApp – I often get the ‘you may have new messages’ notification that can take upto 30 minutes to clear & sync. I accept that a VPN is going to have an impact on battery life but at least once a week it goes nuts and runs the battery down, accounting for 50% usage. some of the issues may be caused by the app interacting with Android Pie / Samsung's battery management - but i'd hope that Mobicip would be able to produce a product that accounts for this. App locking is done by checking against the web config - no connection, no apps. I'd like an admin function to use locally cached settings if no connection. Oh, and then there's the random locking of some settings in android with no way to configure them as unlocked. Frustrating.
Then there's the web portal. the recent redesign does in general make it easier to use, though i have found that in some instances the only way to resolve issues (like not managing phone apps) is to delete a user profile and start again. The phone app management side of things needs some work. firstly, it lists apps that are not on the phone (but may be installed by default on some phones i guess) - why? just list what's actually there. Secondly, that part of the web page refreshes with every change, and disabled apps dropping to the end of the list. what could be a simple 2 step process (select apps to be active & apply) becomes a multi-step time consuming process of change app status, wait for refresh, scroll back down page and repeat. Acceptable (barely) for 1 or 2 apps, but when working on 100? seriously? Especially when having installed mobicip on my phone some apps are ‘greyed out’ in the app management page despite showing as active – and the only way to get them working is to disable then enable them again.
Support is reasonable - but by email or web forum only and may take some time. first response is usually within 24 hours, but resolution may take a few days longer. Some admin functions (cancelling account, changing email address) can only be performed by the support team- why not from the web portal ? I get Mobicip is a relatively small company, but why not reduce your support load by shifting these functions to the web portal ?
