I always plan my own trips but for our first trip to Iceland, I really wanted an expert who could highlight all the must sees and make arrnagements for convenient overnights. I am glad I did. Everyone is so very helpful in Iceland but the town names would have had us utterly lost. Iceland Self Drive put us in the right direction and made our trip a breeze.
We did Southern Iceland Self Drive and captured the beautiful scenery and openess of the people. The tours that were planned for us were fantastic, especially 4 wheeling trip through the highlands. Not to be missed! Hiking the glacier was an unforgettable experience and our stops at the many, many waterfalls allowed us to build some exercise into our trip. With every turn in the road, more stunning beauty.
The hotels for the most part were good. We loved Hotel Ranga and Fosshotel Skaftafel is what it is. Our only disappoinment was Hotel Latki in Efri-Vik. We would have happily gone back to Ranga and based ourselves out of Hella again.
Overall, a top notch vacation organized by super nice people. Good communication and a lot of good advice.

We had an amazing one week trip in Iceland during the month of August. None of our group of four had never done a self drive trip before, so we had absolutely no idea what to expect or whether it was worth it to pay someone else to organise it. All I can say is thank goodness we did not try to do the trip on our own!
Iceland is beautiful but very confusing to navigate. Not only do the words not sound like they are spelled on the maps ("p" actually sounds like "th"), but the road signage is almost non-existent. You could drive past a major tourist attraction and not even realise it! Thankfully Iceland Self Drive put together a great itinerary for us.
Iceland Self Drive was very helpful in making sure everyone got to the hotel despite the fact that our group flew in from several different locations. We got a car, maps, ipad with informative videos about Iceland's major attractions, a local cell phone and all our hotels organised. It was a super fun trip, with no major problems. The only challenging part was figuring out where to return the car to - some more specific directions might have helped. But it was fine in the end and we had no trouble making it to the airport on time. We just wish we had allowed for more than a week as there was so much more that we didn't get to see, like the whale watching.
We have tons of great memories that we won't forget- thank you Gudmunder and Iceland Self Drive!

We wanted to do something special for our 40th anniversary. After months of poring over guidebooks we chose Iceland as a destination and were very pleased with our decision. We live in Colorado and often go mountain hiking and 4WDing on our own. So we planned to visit the better-known destinations in the highlands such as Langisjor, Thorsmork and Landmannalaugur. What we had no experience of was fording rivers fed by glaciers. Since we were going solo (against conventional wisdom) we were understandably concerned.
Luckily we had the foresight to book our trip with Iceland Self Drive . After conferring with Gudmundur, the owner, we quickly realized that our selection of a small 4WD vehicle was inadequate for serious river crossings. Gudmundur was able to book us a Land Cruiser on very short notice. And since our plan was to camp at river’s edge if a crossing wasn’t feasible (and wait for the river level to fall) he also let us borrow a tent and sleeping mats. (We brought our own sleeping bags for the mountain huts).
Gudmundur also arranged for his associate Jenni to be our “guide”, as Jenni was very knowledgeable about the areas we planned to visit and hike. Jenni let us borrow his waders in case we had to “scout” the rivers on foot to check for a safe crossing. We also borrowed his personal cell phone, with instructions to call any time we needed advice or help. As it turns out, we did.
While we were at Langisjor, fellow hikers arriving at the hut informed us of a bad storm approaching, which might make the rivers at Thorsmork impassible. We were able to contact Jenni with our concerns about the possible water level. On his own initiative he called the hut warden in Thorsmork to get “ground truth” about the river conditions. On the warden’s recommendation we decided to “go for it” and were able to make it to Thorsmork safely.
This is only one of several incidents I could mention where Gudmundur and his associates went “above and beyond” in making our trip a success. They were able to arrange for accommodations in all the mountain huts we planned to visit, as well as very nice guesthouses at Hrifunes and Hof. Our concerns about driving solo in the highlands were dealt with professionally and courteously. They were able to assess our level of competence and work with us to make our solo trip a success. I would highly recommend Iceland Self Drive to anyone who wants to experience Iceland on their own initiative.
Iceland Self Drive made our 40th anniversary trip one we will never forget.

We have wanted to go to Iceland for years and finally did it this year. Having surfed the web for ideas we found Iceland self drive seemed to suit us best. Normally we like our independence but were a bit wary of organising everything ourselves, so we booked.
Before our holiday our questions were answered promptly and with good humour. My mistake in booking the the wrong flights (an extra night) were easily accommodated without fuss.
On arrival everything was well thought out. Most of our questions and problems were solved using the supplied iPad, SatNav and phone. The briefing with the map certainly helped too. The upgraded car was a very nice bonus.
Once we traveled out of the city the countryside is stunning. There is much to see. The hotels we stayed at were never less than we hoped for, but were very varied. The voucher system and pre-booking all worked very well. The only query we had was sorted between the hotel receptionist and Gutmandur in moments. The variety of hotels all helped enhance the whole experience.
On holiday, I don't particularly like driving, or staying in hotels, so a circuit of Iceland staying in 9 hotels in 10 nights may sound like a strange thing to do. And yet, I really loved it and I look forward to visiting Iceland again.

I do not regret using this company for my tour of iceland. The excellent kit they supplied (mobile phone, Sat Nav & iPad) was essential, it allowed me to quickly get help when I slipped off the road during a snow storm. They also were very attentive during the incident. A very good introductory discussion helped identify the best bits to linger around.

We booked our trip to Iceland with Iceland Self Drive tours. This was our first time booking something like this online . We were a bit nervous but the staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. They were quick to respond to our questions and offered great suggestions. They were able to guide us as to what tours to take and how to change our route to suite our interests. Everything was booked- our hotels, car rental and tours. We had a GPS and a phone and even an IPAD with video clips of what we would be seeing the next day. What a great idea that was! They picked us up at the airport and took us to our hotel and went over our itinerary and answered any questions we had. All the hotels and tours were great. We would definitely recommend them. We loved our adventure in Iceland . Thank you. Yvonne and Lyle from Brampton Ontario Canada

We booked with Iceland Self Drive on the Internet and all correspondence and questions were promptly replied to. We have just finished our tour and everything went like clockwork and we had a marvellous time. The phone and iPad they supply was a great idea. We only had to use the phone to advise the very late arrivals at hotels as there was so much to see. Our only problem with our tour was we should have booked a longer one!
