When returning the car in Dublin the agent even looked under the car and supposedly found some scratches. Reading other reviews and sites, this seems like a common practice when returning vehicles in Dublin specially. I have used rental cars all over the world but will never use Europcar anywhere

Cork Airport September 2019.
I booked the car for 2 days, and booked the insurance separately with carhireexcess.ie. At the desk the representative said that they don't accept that and would have to reserve €1500 on my CC which i did not have. The only other option was to buy their excess insurance.
I was clearly informed that if I returned the car early, as was likely, that I would only pay for the excess insurance for the day that I used it. Car was returned a day early and lo and behold I was charged for the 2 days. Then in subsequent emails afterward,it was said that it was policy not to give this refund. This isn't even about the money which was relatively a small amount. A total shakedown.

I have rented a car from europcar - i never experienced that they ask for 1500 euro deposit . When returning the car on the underside they found a “damage” which i for sure could not have seen when renting it and it is just a scam - they withold 800 euro from my credit card .... never ever rent a car at europcar .....
I am now consulting my legal staff to end the corporate deal with this fraude company

DO NOT RENT from this company. If you do, expect that you will wait at least 1 hour and you won’t get the car you signed up for. They did offer an upgrade, however at the last minute they did a bait & switch with a couple who complained. They got our sedan and we got a hatchback. The funny part is they didn’t even have any Audi sedan at the facility. It would have been better to pay for a less expensive car then the extra $ for a car I didn’t want. Of course there is no refund or credit because I could have waited another 30 minutes for them to find a different car. Plenty of other companies to give $700 to!

Service good but beware airport pickup costs which are, to my mind, not well flagged when the booking is made....
This is my reason for reducing to 2*

My wife and I rented a car 3 weeks ago from Europcar at Shannon airport.
Pick up was fine with no delays or pressure to purchase additional services or insurances.
Car was perfect and no issues over the 2 weeks hire.
I vacuumed and gave the car a quick wash on day before return as we usually do..... I do take good care of my own cars....
Filled with fuel in Shannon and returned to drop off.
All perfect you might think....
Oh how wrong can one be.
A staff member met us and proceeded to microscopically check car....alarm bells ringing.
It appeared that he was determined to find fault.
He returned to us and announced that he had found damage to a wheel.
He went on to say that it a very superficial scuff but that he would have to report it and would have to hold E200 on our credit card.
He added that it would not cost the E200 and that we would be refunded the difference.
I disputed his assertion that we had caused the damage.
When he showed me a 4cm superficial scuff on the outside rim I said that he "must be joking"......
Well 3 days later I was E136 lighter.
I had contacted Europcar customer services several times before the invoice and cash was taken but no meaningful response other than automated messages.
I have rented dozens of cars from many companies, in many countries, over many years.
I have never damaged a hire car and have never before been accused of causing any damage.
I do not believe that I caused the damage to this wheel.
I do suspect that Europcar at Shannon have a policy of finding damage and charging customers.
It could well be that some of this "damage" is from earlier rental and despite customers paying the damage remains unrepaired. I certainly have no evidence that the damage I was accused of causing was repaired as all I was sent was an estimate for repair from a garage in Ennis.
I remain unconvinced that I caused this superficial scuff and I leave it to other customers to draw their own conclusions.
I CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE USING EUROPCAR OR ITS SUBSIDUARIES IN THE FUTURE.

Hired car for three days from the site just outside of Dublin airport. Had booked it through RyanAir and also picked up insurance through AXA. Went to collect car and was told that I needed to put my CC details in so they could claim up to 1500euros in the event of damage etc. Did this and signed everything then turns out they had charged me 90euros for insurance that I did not ask for and was never offered. Tried to contact Europcar in Ireland and now just saying that I signed the documents so tough luck. No mention of the fact the guy at the rental shop has clearly ripped me off by not mentioning any such charges and pretty much gained my CC details under false pretences as if he said he was going to charge me 90euros for insurance I didn't need I wouldn't have done so. Total thievery at it's best.

I rented from South Dublin site - tram ride out of the city. Staff were nothing but helpful and sorted out the issues there and then. I appreciate the help
Couldn't recommend them enough. Deposit refund on credit card after hire isn't instant which is my only complaint generally for hire cars world wide

Absolutely I do not recommend, Cork airport: after returning the car I filled up with full fuel and so I have been charged money from my credit card for fuel. Avoid this company!

Outrageous wait for car on Friday, 23rd August at Spencer Dock in Dublin, pick-up at 12 noon.
There are no dedicated desks for 'privilege' customers like me at Spencer Dock. I was left waiting for an hour and 15 minutes to pick up a pre-booked and prepaid car on the Europcar website. No special treatment for its so-called 'privilege' customers. I have never been treated so badly by a car hire company. And no apologies were forthcoming from any member of staff. All I was told was to sit and "wait a few minutes".
Staff seemed to fawn over foreign tourists with no regard for native, local customers like me, who are regular customers.
If the centre cannot cater at busy times to many customers, it should re-think whether it retains its Spencer Dock centre open.
There are alternatives to use, such as the Enterprise pick-up point at nearby Russell Street.
I suspect that the disregard shown by staff to regular 'privilege' customers who save time by booking and paying online prior to picking up their car is also shown to comments left about Europcar on this platform.
I'm very tempted to give up my 'privilege' membership and give my custom to Enterprise following this outrageous lack of customer service. But I'll give a chance to Europcar to convince me otherwise.

The worst experience possible. Avoid at all costs.
They are complete sharks. Our car hire we booked was 20 Euros a day and ended up costing 120+ per day with the insurance they forced on us, then the dodgy charges later. We were charged 'damage' of 100 Euros for some crumbs and a little normal mess from using a car, a 5 minute clean. They charged us an extortionate amount to fill the tank + the fee and yet the tank wasn't full when we collected it. Do NOT believe the price you book it at, from there it escalates. They have your credit card and there appears to be no way to challenge the charges.

Booked a flight to Dublin from Calgary on WestJet. WestJet offered car rental at the end of the ticket purchase process, and so I booked with Europcar, mostly as a place holder so that no matter what, we would have a rental car available in Dublin. Thankfully I paid nothing, and they did not get my credit card number. I then did more research on car rentals, and found a large number of items - collision insurance, third party liability, airport surcharge, deposits, charges for a second driver, charges for taking the car from the Republic into Northern Ireland etc. - which were not addressed in the perfunctory on-line rental information. So I called the Dublin location, but an automated voice said I had to ask questions via e-mail. I sent the e-mail, and two weeks later, have not had any sort of reply. Meanwhile, I contacted an experienced travel agent to book us a car with ALL of my questions answered. I understand Dublin is notoriously difficult about car rentals, and therefore I would recommend using a travel agent - with European experience! - to book the vehicle and have ALL of the charges disclosed. P.S. You will need to bring a letter from your credit card company to say you are covered in Ireland for collision. And note that this collision coverage DOES NOT cover personal injury to yourself or others, or to any property outside of the rental car itself. You WILL have to purchase third party insurance for this (and yes, it was included in the list of charges through the travel agent). Oh, last comment. Out of courtesy, tried to notify Europcar at Dublin Airport that we would not be renting the car from them. Seems impossible to do on line, and after over 10 minutes of waiting on the phone, the connection was terminated.

Will never use this company again. Lady at the desk in Dublin airport was rude and clearly had no patience for customers. They set their credit card requirement too high for most customers thereby forcing you to pay extortionate insurance fees (doubled the price of the hire car). Complete thieves avoid at all cost.

We rented a car from Europcar in mid-July 2019 in Dublin Ireland. We had all documentation necessary for our insurance coverage thru our MasterCard. The car had 2 damaged areas and both were noted on the agreement. When we returned the car on 7-23-2019, the inspector noted some small scratches under the front bumper and began paperwork to confiscate 600 euros. You could not see the scratches standing or squatting down. I asked for a manager to point out the damage for me before he could talk to the inspector. He could not find the damage and had to get the phony report being written up to look under the bumper and then point it out. I drove the car for two weeks with absolutely no issues with hitting anything. Since I did not find and take pictures of the undercarriage of the car, I could not prove the damage scratches were there when I picked up the car which I am positive it was. Again, I hit nothing. The Europcar rentals out of Dublin are a scam and very dishonest - probably and especially if you don’t purchase their insurance for 30 plus euros per day. They are going to get you one way or the other.

Do not ever use Europcar in Dublin Airport or anywhere else. We where charged for extra insurance in spite of the fact that we told the desk clerk specifically that we had our own private insurance. We where asked for a deposit and were told that it was just a deposit and would be refunded !!!!! We have had a correspondence with Europcar about our refund, but of course we did not get any as according to them it was our fault that we had not read the contract properly. The desk clerk stood with the car keys and had us sign a contract before he then gave us the car keys and asked for our Credit Card !!!!! We think that we were mislead with the whole procedure and are out of pocket for 469 euro!!! STAY FAR AWAY FROM EUROPCAR

Picked up two car rentals on our recent trip to the United Kingdom and Ireland. In both cases, the rental car we booked wasn’t available. At the first rental, the car they gave us wasn’t as good, but it held our luggage.
But in DUBLIN, there was a problem.
(1)The agent was very persistent in trying to sell us extra insurance. I had collision coverage through my credit card, and showed him a website printout conforming this. He then asked to see a personalized letter from the credit card company confirming they were providing the collision coverage and wanted to see the $ amount of the coverage limits on the rental car. I showed him a personalized letter from a different credit card company. He then started to say that credit card companies coverage limit of $65,000 wouldn’t be sufficient. Eventually he stopped and accepted my declination of coverage. Our luggage didn’t fit into the vehicle he provided, and the next vehicle he offered cost us $30 per day more. It also took us over an hour after our first arrival at the rents car centre to get our car.
(2) the car we took had less than a full tank of gas, but I didn’t notice this until we had left the airport. By this time we were too exhausted to return to the airport to show them this.
(3) there is no way to speak with anyone in europcar customer service. The airport location has a contact phone number, but I left 2 messages and never got a call back.
(4) eventually we discovered while driving on one section of the M50 highway near Dublin - it has an electronic toll. It would have been useful if europcar had told us ( in the rental car agreement or checkin counter) we have to go online and pay this bill. Tried calling europcar to find this out, but they don’t answer the phone. Contacted customer service by email and it took 2 emails & more than a day for them to answer the question.
I’d recommend you try somebody else instead of europcar

Hidden costs.....wanted to take £1500 of our card, if you don't have it you have to pay €90 additional fees.....this wasn't made clear when we booked. When we returned the car there was no queing system and one one person checking cars back in....wouldn't book again.

EuropCar at Dublin airport are refusing to return deposits for rentals that are denied on the grounds that you do not have an international license, which is not a legal requirement. This is an abuse, according to other car rental companies in Dublin. Do not use #EuropCar or their agents #IrishCarRentals. We will not remove this post until they return our money!

I rented a car from Cork airport Feb 2019. I rang a couple of times about where to return it as it was an evening flight, was told return it to car park. I drove into the compound anyway there was no one there so returned it and explained this to the desk. Got an email about 50 mins later to say there was a scratch on the alloy wheel and they charged me €100. It was so small I would not have seen it when I picked the car up and looked from the measurement as if it was 15 mm which is permitted within its wear and tear policy. They withdrew €150 from my deposit but later refunded €50. Despite numerous emails and promises that a manager would get back to me no one contacted me. I would not use them again and would advice people to really check the car photograph all marks etc.

For the first time I didn't take photos of the hire car. The car was in surprisingly good condition for 6000km. However on return they closely inspected the car and found a small scuff mark on the edge of the plastic wheel trims. My response was "You're joking!". But they said they would have to replace all the hub caps, and charged me 100 Euro. Is this just a local thing at Shannon or are all Europcar centres the same?

I’ve hired many times from Europcar Belfast and staff at the desk have always been helpful.
In Jan this year on returning home a charge of £16.75 was taken from my account on querying this I was told it was for 6ltr of fuel, unfortunately I didn’t have my receipt and I always refuel at Maxol by the Airport, the car was checked when I returned and fuel gauge checked and all was in order. They have refused to reimburse as I haven’t got the receipt to prove it.
By the time I discovered this charge I had already booked and paid my next trip in Feb.this time I kept my receipt showed it to the man on return and asked him to look at my receipt check car thoroughly as I didn’t want any extra charges. Well on return home £30 was taken out of my account, this time for crossing the border.
I will never use this hire company ever again as you never know what charges they will make without any notification they just take it and probably hope you won’t notice it.

Absolutely Ridiculous!!! We had paid for a car and when we arrived they asked for a credit card. They would not accept a debit card or cash and they would not let us have the car without a credit card. Another family member did have a credit card and they would not accept it as a deposit as it was not the name of the driver so charged us €210.

I rented with a part of Europcar called Carhire.ie . At the desk at Europcar they tried pressuring me into taking out extra insurance when I was already covered by rental cars.com cover. He was already dialing the number to cancel my current insurance before I could even work out how much extra I would have to pay, as he would only tell me the price per day. And when I said no to the extra insurance he basically chucked the keys at me and told me to figure it out. As I was pulling out of the rental place I could see other customers being shown around there cars. On a plus side the car was brilliant even though it was the cheapest. And on returning they seemed ok.

Hired through online cheap rental firm through Carhire.ie. Always good service at Dublin Airport from Europcar. Quick and easy and no pressure to bump up insurances and scaremonger. They get that I have my own excess insurance cover and unlike other countries in Europe, don't bother me with scare stories. A very good quality clean vehicle that I had requested and an easy drop-off process. Thank you Europcar Dublin Airport.
