My old Fiesta was written off after a gentleman reversed out of his drive into me, I was therefore in the market for a second hand car around the £2000 mark.
I visited various websites over many days and came across Charles Rooney Car Sales. I was looking at an 05 plate Mini One, full service history and looked immaculate, 104,000 miles. I made an online enquiry and was quickly contacted by Mr Rooney to say that the vehicle was still available but with a reduced price of £1500 from £2000.
That afternoon I took the short trip south to Glasgow to view the vehicle. I was met by Mr Rooney. He showed me to the vehicle and left me with the keys to have a good look around the vehicle.
The vehicle was not quite as immaculate as it looked online with faded paint on the front near side bumper, marks on the rear offside bumper and no roof aerial. When the engine compartment was inspected I noted that one of the caps was missing. Mr Rooney came across and asked what I thought, I pointed out the small problem with the vehicle and was met with the reply "What do you expect for the price". Not the reply I expected. However, in fairness he did have a point.
I agree to put a deposit of £200 on the vehicle and Mr Rooney was happy to hold the vehicle for me until such times as the insurance money was paid.
A few days later I sent an email enquiry to say that the money had been paid and I would pick the vehicle up on the Wednesday, I asked how much petrol was in it and would there be enough to see me home to Perthshire. My daughter received a message from Mr Rooney asking me to ring back.
When I rang Mr Rooney back he appeared somewhat perplexed that I would want him to put petrol in the vehicle, something I had not asked for, I merely wanted to know whether to bring the petrol in my shed down with me.
On Wednesday I drove down to Glasgow to pick the vehicle up. I was met by another employee by the name of Billy. I was shown round to the vehicle that was parked in the back yard. The vehicle had been valeted to a very good standard with mats. The missing aerial now had pride of place on the Mini. Billy gave me a circuitous route to drive to test the vehicle. As I pulled out of the back yard a warning light came on, this was clearly the front brakes as they were extremely gritty but after driving some moments cleared. The engine was switched off and turned on again and the warning light disappeared.
The vehicle drove very well and I was happy to buy the vehicle. The deposit was paid by credit card and it was my intention to pay the remaining balance in the same way, however I was met by a charge of £39 to use the card, something that had never been mentioned to me before. However given that I have legal protection through the card I thought it wise to accept the charge and pay the £1339 outstanding.
I had family to visit in the local area and asked if it was okay if I left the vehicle in the yard while visiting family, I stated I would only be half an hour but returned some 2 hours later. I was grateful to Mr Rooney and his staff for this.
I saw Mr Rooney in his office and stated that the car was a nice wee drive and pointed out the warning light that had came on during the test drive and was met with the reply "didn't do that when I drove it this morning", I found this rather dismissive.
I drove the car from the dealership the fortly miles or so home to Perthshire. Fifteen miles into the journey another warning light came on in the vehicle, the runflat warning light. On my return home I checked the true pressures and found the rear nearside tyre to have a PSI of nineteen. The runflat switch was reset and has stayed off.
The car itself runs exceptionally well, I have been very impressed with it. I did miss a number of small points on inspection but these would still not have stopped me buying the vehicle, the only real issue is the central locking. When the central locking opens the door it fails to open the drivers door, something I can certainly live with and it was my fault not to have checked this properly prior to driving the vehicle away.
The caveat to all this is clearly how well the car continues to run and whether there are any problems with it that I am currently not aware of. I made a number of checks on the vehicle (Comes as a habit even after retiring from the Police Force) and was happy with all these checks. The Mini is booked in with BMW next Wednesday for a full service and a full diagnostic check. We shall see what comes from this.
Would I recommend or buy again from Mr Rooney and Charles Rooney Car Sales? Yes I would. Mr Rooney can come across as a little Gruff (I'm sure he is a big softy at home) but the service was good, the car was in good order for the year, it was valeted to a good standard and drives remarkably well. The small problems I missed were down to me, it would have been nice if they were pointed out but could I really expect them to do that? For the same style of vehicle, same mileage etc I was looking at somewhere between £2000 and £2300, having paid £1500 I feel as if I have had a very good deal.
So thank you Mr Rooney and Charles Rooney Car Sales (Caveats aside) but if I may offer a wee bit of advice, smile more ?
Well as I said there was a caveat to this review. Mini was at BMW today for a service and a full diagnostic. The following problems were brought to my attention.
1. Offside front side light insecure (I had already noticed this)
2. Engine Mount is showing signs of oil leak.
3. Front Brake pipes are corroded, front offside is worse.
4. Offside front wheel bearing badly worn (to be replaced next week)
5. Nearside front strut top mount is split.
6. Nearside front eyelet bush is split
7. All brake discs are corroded
8. Corrosion on Power Steering Pipes
9. Rear offside brake pipe clips are broken.
Much of this is to do with the age of the vehicle. I will, at some point in the near future get a breakdown of the costs for these individual problems.
Prior to buying this vehicle from Mr Rooney the vehicle had only done approximately 2500 miles since its last MOT in March. The vehicle had passed its MOT with no advisories. I was therefore a little surprised that the offside bearing has to be replaced but not surprised at the level of corrosion.
Oh and I missed one more thing.
10. Suspension corroded.
Final update for this review.
The final estimate for the work has came through from BMW. The cost of the work to rectify all the problems with this Mini amounts to £1017.23. Please bear in mind that this is a main dealers estimate. I have already paid £160 for the front wheel bearing and the estimate didn't include the front suspension bush which comes in at £133. I would suggest a local garage would come in somewhere around the £700 mark.
I'll leave this review at that.
I hope this review has been of some use and people are able to make a good judgement on using Charles Rooney Car Sales.
