Just a scam, My son has had Bell insurance for 3 months now, he gets an email every week telling him how his driving was. Gets a poor score every week even though he never speeds, never accelerates or brakes hard, hardly does any miles etc etc. We have just come back from 2 weeks holiday in my car w his car has never left the drive at home for the whole time but he is still been scored as a poor driver over this period.
We phoned customer services previously to ask why his scores are always poor whe; his driving is good. We were told his scores were lowered because of access to risk, after a lot of pushing we were told that meant driving his car, the score was low not because of bad driving but because he had driven the car. He had driven about 25 miles in a week and this was the reason he was determined to be a poor driver.
The reviews say it all, this company is scamming young people. Simple as that.

I can see a lot of bad reviews here, quite surprised. I am with Bell since the first day which is over 4 years. Every time there is a good offer for my renewal quote, advisors are always super friendly.
Based on my experience would recommend.

Awful insurance company
I had a car accident that was not my fault and at every singe point of contact with bell they were extremely unhelpful. I also had motor legal protection with the which was VIA EUI law who topped the biscuit when it comes to awful service. My claim took over a year and a half and wasn't a difficult case (the other party admitted fault straight away). I continually had to chase them up and it has all been a ridiculous process.

Went with Bell Plug and Drive as it seemed reasonably priced compared to other quotes and I only had to keep the plug and unit for 3 months and at the end I would get a discount on my insurance depending on my driving.
After 9 months they finally said I could stop using the plug and drive unit and after only scoring gold for that time they offered me a measly £10 discount on my insurance which cost approximate £840. I posted them the unit back, paying for my own postage as they failed to provide me with a return envelope. Around 2 months later I started to receive emails claiming that I owed them £50 due to them not receiving the plug and drive unit. After multiple phone calls explaining to them that I had posted them the plug and drive unit they still claim that I owe them £50 for a the unit and I have sinced received emails claiming that they will pass my details on to a debt collection company and charge me an additional £25.

Unfortunately I have chosen Bell Insurance because they were the cheapset of my quotes at that time but they have asked me for few paperworks such as V5, COUNTERPART OF DIRIVNG LICENCE, DRIVING SUMMARY, COPY OF DRIVING LICENCE AND UTILIY BILLS which I have provided twice (I can provide details if necessary)
Despite providing everything they kept sending threatning letters to cancel my insurance and I have had to cancel the insurance with Bell Insurance and I am going make complaint to Financial Ombudsman as well.
Utter rubbish from customers services to other departments and should not be allowed to be in business after all that bad reviews !!

Reasonably priced for my circumstances. Installing and uninstalling the blackbox is a breeze and I never had any problems with it for the 3 months I had it installed. They rated me as a bronze driver all throughout the process which was probably a fair statement. It didn't increase my premiums at all but could have reduced them if they deemed me to be a better driver.
Never experienced using the claims department however registering and calling to set up and cancel my renewal I spoke to friendly people both times.
Very happy for my first insurance.

Watch out for this company will still your money for not reason, I bought the policy in one payment, and then I saw the ad showing the black box to control your mileage, I called to cancel the very moment, after 2 minutes they agreed to cancel it, but they will have to charge me £28, then I received my money back in three days, £28 short, So you have been warned.

I ended up paying hundreds of pounds more than my agreed quote at the beginning of the contract for various reasons. They seem to add on charges for anything, even when I left at the end of my 12 year period they charged me an exit fee. Do not use Bell insurance

If I could have left negative stars I would have. I am now £82.36 less well off because I decided to cancel my policy. £49.50 to cancel, then a further further £30-something for the amount of "days in cover" whatever that means...I already paid £80 at the beginning of the month! They end your call with "have a nice rest of your day" in a cheery voice - probably because they just shafted you of your money for cancelling the policy. I hope they reply to this, but they won't - because they are too busy taking money from other unsuspecting people.
A very unhappy customer.

Worst company I have ever been with. They make it impossible to contact and increased my payment monthly. Once I contacted them about this they said at the end of the year they would process all miles I've done and pay be back the money I was owed. They NEVER did, even when I contacted them about this they ignored my emails and made calling ridiculously hard, they also took a years insurance out of my account when up for renewal even when I told them I wouldn't be back- which was another hassle. Pathetic company, would NEVER go back.

Never had any crashes so can't comment on that, but I asked them about cancelling and they straight up didn't bother replying. I just got reminded a month or two later by a renewal email, there is literally no way of stopping a renewal on their website.
Yes you can phone them, but they have deliberately designed it in a way where it's as hard as possible to cancel. That, more than anything else, is the sign of a greedy company who will try and fleece people for as much money as possible.

Do not purchase insurance with Bell, I had a insurance policy with them in 2014 and canceled half way through due to them wanting to up my premiums because of someone keying my car. I had made no claims with my own insurance at the time and had only reported it to the police. I then find that after my policy was cancelled they had been putting late payment points on my credit report despite having proof payment was made on some of the dates before cancellation and proof of cancelation they still will not remove these markers off my credit report which are clearly incorrect and against the law to put incorrect information onto someones report. I have contacted them several times over the years alongside the credit agencies in order to get this removed and am told they can't remove it due to the account be closed and finalised in 2015 after my cancelation which is utter rubbish. The credit agencies say bell are the only ones with the authority to change it so I'm stuck with a inaccurate credit report which is damaging my credit files even when applying for bank accounts.

I have been with Bell for 3 years. I started as a driver with 0 no bonus claims and Bell made the best offer for me. I used a black box for 3 months and got my feedback on regular basis. As a result I got some money back from them. Not much, but still. I have been involved in a car accident which wasn't my fault. Bell advisors were very friendly, informative and supportive, I couldn't ask for more of them. In my experience, Bell's customer advisors are absolute stars and made my experience with Bell, really positive.

Absolute bunch of criminals. ROSIE from customer complaint is useless as are the rest of the staff I have dealt with. All just quote this is what terms and condiutions say, no effort to understand anything. they took the word of a car repair shop over two insurance companies, just so they can penalise us on our policy.
No effort at all to offer any way other than one to suit them.
Will NEVER EVER go near them and will be publicising to as many outlets as possible how bad they are.

Absolutely outraged being charged £20 when I was being 'resold' my insurance to me. Firstly, being on the 'safe driver policy' I was under the impression that I was getting a good car insurance deal for years and this year I get the renewal quote for £940, pathetic!
The lady I spoke to had a very good manner and was able to reduce my insurance by £250 and was very happy to speak with her. But that is not increasing a single star. I was on the phone to her for just over 7 minutes, including holding time and was charged £20 for the delight of being on hold. I'm guessing that they have to reclaim their money lost from customers somehow.
Strongly do not advise insuring with this company

I would like to give this no stars if I had the option to do so. I was involved in a bad accident where I was hit from behind by a speeding van as it tried to overtake on a road that was far too narrow. The police said the van was at fault, and there were witnesses. I had a very frightening experience when the two men got out of the van, started banging on my car and making threats. The police and members of the public restrained them, and an ambulance was called. Bell were very unsympathetic, deemed it my fault, but refused to explain why, and did not offer me a courtesy car which was included in my policy. I am absolutely horrified that they can do this.

Don’t make the mistake of paying for a year up front if there’s a chance you may cancel, the cancellation fee is astronomical in comparison to the small savings of an annual plan.

The only reason I used them was the cheapest insurance quote I found online. The black box they wanted me to have in my car for 3 months to have the chance for discount, did not do anything to the policy. As no matter how I was driving ( I tried 3 different styles for the time I had this in my car ) I always scored "bronze" which do not give any discount. It is just a scam to make people believe they can quickly earn discount.
When I changed the car from Insurance group 17 to 23 my premium gone up, which is perfectly normal. But within 3 months change a car again that falls from ins. group 23 to 14 my premium almost doubled.
Personally I do not trust them and I suggest to avoid this company.

For me it wasn't 3 months but 104 days. The weekly feedback emails varied by 1 to 3 days late, with the performance grade calculated each time using all data to date. A vague text message on what I expected was the end (day 90) said "Just a couple of weeks left until your Plug & Drive review". The 14th week feedback wasn't received at all, ahead of the review end notification as it turned out.
The additional discounts are 4% for Gold, 2% for Silver - these apply before insurance premium tax (at 12%). 45% of customers receive Silver and a fortunate 10% get Gold. It isn't really HOW you drive that determines this but largely how MUCH you drive. Under 35 hours of car time away from home per week and under 200 minutes driving per week appears necessary for Gold. Under 50 hours and 300 mins for Silver. Interestingly for an average speed of 39 km/h this makes Gold impossible for annual mileage over 4,200 and Silver over 6,300.
The policy definitely lives up to the "black box" name, as there's scant detail available during purchase on how you are judged. I found later that their risk factors are: Accel/Decel/Corner (~0.4 G, 0.6 G, 0.35 G variable), Exposure to Risk (a measure of vehicle time away from 'home' location), Late Night Driving (even a second between 22:00 and 05:00 local), Short Trips (frequent short-distance trips per day) and Speeding (excess speed, likely 78+ mph). Their support reference things like "Average", "High" and even "Highest" but without clear definition of what these mean in terms of score. There's no online dashboard either.
I had one specific feedback email beginning "This week we noticed". The rest were all of the pattern "Did you know, the safest drivers are most likely to…" and completely unrelated to how I drove that week, just looping through a set of 4:
1. "…avoid harsh acceleration giving them more time to react to other drivers?"
2. "…leave enough room between them and the car in front which means that braking is smoother?"
3. "…accelerate smoothly, which could also help save money on fuel?"
4. "…steer clear of harsh braking giving them more time to react to other road users?"
The box is made by Redtail Telematics GB with GPS, accelerometers, rechargeable battery and SIM card. The 12 V plug part contains a hardware switch to physically detect when it's plugged in. It has to be plugged in for at least 95% of the time and 95% of the distance travelled. Yellow flashes then occasional red means activity recording, even when unplugged. It doesn't send back data gathered when unplugged.
I also had a non-fault claim through their handling company Auxillis, with several weeks delay before the approved garage was permitted to begin the repair work due to delays in that company's independent valuation estimator (Tec Reports).
Update: I received gold rating, yet my renewal price increased by 19.7% / £104.16 and my simple claim remains unsettled after 50 weeks.

First of all, when I was deciding what car insurance to get, I have noticed that Bell wrote only positive comments about their Plug & Drive service. It was written that the device will monitor driving pattern and according to the results it will give the discount for your premium.
I was driving very carefully at all the times. But I have never received the final statement about my driving (only some of the comments in between, which were not relevant to my driving), the only email I have got was about the increase of mileage. It was stated that according to the Plug & Drive device I will drive 13000 miles per year and additional amount of £85.87 will be added to my premium. But first of all - officially I haven't break the mileage allowance yet. This is only prediction.
So, I am very disappointed with the service, now it looks like scam for me, as Bell making efforts to get new customers and then charging them for no reasons and lying about advantages that customers will have.
Unfortunately, I am not planning to stay with Bell in the future and not recommend it to anybody.
