Today, I tried a free trial at Battle Republic. This is a boxing gym located in South Homewood across the street from Holler & Dash. I was welcomed at the desk by two friendly coaches, assisted to purchase my hand wraps (a one-time purchase of $6), and supplied with boxing gloves (complimentary with the class), and a heart rate monitor (free with the first free class only). I was about 15 minutes early (class 8:45 a.m. on Saturday), and I feel that I had plenty of time to prepare (put my purse in a cubby, put on my hand wraps, etc.). Battle Republic definitely has a high-energy vibe, but feels welcoming to beginners (it has been forever since I took a boxing class). Our instructor, Kristen, was 50% hype woman, 50% DJ, and 100% excellent boxing coach! She brought great energy and fun to the class. Lighting in the room is low, which helped me feel less self conscious about getting moves wrong. The information from my heart rate monitor showed up on a screen at the front, so I could see what my heart rate was, and which heart rate zone I was in. The class included, of course, boxing, core, and leg work, and plenty of cardio. When the class was over, I received an email with my heart rate information. It even shows you where you rank (cardio-wise) in the rest of the class, which is fun if you are competitive! I got to meet one of the owners while I was there, and she was extremely nice and welcoming. Even though all the staff is shredded with muscle, they are so nice, and I did not feel intimidated. Check it out!
