I used Avis several times in the airport but by the time you add on all the extras it was getting really expensive so wanted a more reasonably priced alternative. Booked through ‘Faro Airport’ but it’s actually a third party. Booked the car and the insurance as thought the insurance would be through Autorent but it’s a separate policy so cancel one and you need to cancel both. The reviews were mixed for Autorent so took a video of the car when we picked it up. Pleasant customer service, car fine, 74000 on the clock and a lot of marks, wasn’t bothered about that as long as we weren’t accused of causing them on our return which I’d read on other reviews. Tank a quarter full, fine for us as not a lot of driving and put diesel in before returning the car to make sure there was a quarter on the return.
Office doesn’t open until 8am and our check in opened at 8am so a few alarms ringing but we arrived 5 minutes before 8 and we were in the minibus to the airport by 8.03 so massively efficient and no challenges around the condition of the car on the return.
I handed over my credit card in a hotel in Faro (no payment made) and paid 50 Euros for a couple of additional drivers with Autorent. Got a phone call from my bank 3 days later to say my card had been used fraudulently 3 times and someone had attempted to use it for a 4th, so just be a cautious as security seems to have been amiss during one of these transactions.
I’d probably use Autorent again if my flight was a bit later and I could purchase their own insurance, there are a lot of reviews saying negative things, I just experienced an efficient team.

Pick up shuttle was not there in car park 4, so the 7 of us and 9 cases waited in the sun for 10 mins as advised by another rental car company who were waiting to pick up.
Efficient desk service through to getting the car. The checking over of the car was too efficient though. I had to ask agent to come back and reinspect the car.
I counted over 15 scratches and dents. Sadly for me, they wanted to charge for 2 major dents. One dent was not recorded when I signed, it was quite a deep scratch, so I’m wondering if they “pretended” to mark the damage on the contract when I pointed out?!?. Luckily I had taken a video of the car which clearly showed a date stamp and the damage was clear to see.........agent quickly moved on!
Second minor dent on the boot I missed on my inspection and the boot was open when I made a video. I couldn’t prove it was there when I picked up, so had to pay €215! They had me over a barrel!
The guy had all the excuses lined up, he wanted extra money and just said claim on your insurance!
Basically, take your time when inspecting the car and ensure ALL scratches, however minor are marked up. Ensure you see the agent marking each item, don’t assume they will honestly do this as you continue the inspection. Take a thorough video of the car for evidence and make sure you have evidence of the right fuel being returned. If you are thorough, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Any excuse to charge extras!!! After a long que at passport control and baggage collection, and a 10 minute walk to car park 4 (the furthest car park) then a 20min wait for the auto rent bus at Faro airport. When we finally got to the car hire place we then waited another 20 mins to be served and then told we had to pay €35 euros for being late! When challenged Bruno said “I can shut the shop if you would prefer”. Rude and unacceptable customer service. Bearing in mind it was now 9pm and we had 2 young children with no choice but to pay. The VW polo had several scratches and scuffs all over the car and no cigarette lighter. However the car was very clean. On return had one bar less on the petrol and they charged €10 for that as well. Do not use Auto Rent they excessively charge extras and customer service is appalling.

Excellent rental from start to finish!
Smooth pick-up and shuttle from car park 4 at Faro airport. The office is clean and the staff speak fantastic English, are very helpful and informative. They gave all information required, contact numbers and guidance as needed. The car was lent with a full tank on a same-same return basis. No problems with the car throughout and return was smooth. The deposit was cancelled as soon as the car was returned and I was given a receipt for the cancellation. Best car hire we have used yet for Faro!

First time I have rented from an off-site firm and it was a seamless experience. Waited <5 mins at the airport for pick up mini-bus and the paperwork at the office was dealt with in minutes. Car was virtually new and matched my expectations in terms of size. Staff were really friendly, no hard-sell just quick and efficient. I will definitely use Auto Rent again, by far and away the best car hire I have used out of Faro

Absolute scam artists.
First car I collected had a faulty gear lever causing gear lever to move into reverse when selecting first. Able to select reverse without lifting knob to overcome gate stop.
Took it back during the evening and did not see minute mark on front lhs bumper and stone chip on bottom of front spoiler.
When checking on return agent checked fuel level inside and without checking outside said there was a problem and pointed out the damage.
When returning prior to a flight check in they had me by the short and curlies and I had to stump €130+ or they would have charged my card any way.
No arguing, no discussion just pay up!
I have used AutoRent at Faro Airport for years.

This company used to be very good - we have rented cars with them for years (usually 3-4 times a year, every time we went to the Algarve). However, now that Tourism is again on the rise in the Algarve, they seem to have become rather greedy and dishonest.
When we returned the car, they claimed we had a cut tyre. This is not true. The tyre was not cut at all, at the very most there was a tiny rubber flake coming off of one of the tyres that could hardly be seen at naked eye. Yet, the person checking the car went directly for it as soon as we handed in the car, as if he knew it was there (the car was brand new and although we looked for scratches when we received the car, we did not meticulously check the tyres. As such, we ended up paying 205 Euros for the alleged damage as we had no proof of it not being there (remember to always take photos of the car).
I asked for a report detailing the damage and payment so that I could claim it via the insurance policy I bought when I rented the car. They said they would send it via email on that day (24th April) and asked me for my email details, which I provided. However, no email was ever sent.
I sent them 3 emails with no reply. I had to phone them and they eventually replied with an invoice instead of a report detailing the damage they identified and the charges they imposed. They are resisting putting the charge/ car damage they claimed in writing. I assume this is so because they have been dishonest and now do not want to provide proof of it. As a result, I have not been able to claim the charge to my insurance. So they have been dishonest on a double account - of charging for something as little as a rubber flake that should be put to tear and wear - and of not allowing me to claim the charge via my insurance.
Sadly, I cannot say I am surprised. I am just really sad that Portuguese companies continue to shamelessly take advantages of tourists.

When renting the car on 13.07.2018 at the Faro agency, I met an employee named Oscar. When asked about cleaning requirements, he said that I did not have to clean the car when returning it. “You do not have to wash the outside of the car, and if there is sand inside, it is not a problem, just check that there is not an excessive amount”.
I had no reason to doubt on this information. Oscar was very friendly and clearly incited me not to make a full cleaning of the car upon returning it. In fact, this is what happens in other car hire firms and it appeared that it was the same with Auto Rent.
Unfortunately, it seems that I fell in a trap, because when returning the car, I have been immediately said that I had to pay a cleaning charge of 50 € for the reason that “the car was not in the same condition as 14 days ago”. Well, after 14 days, it is obvious that the car could not be in the same state.
This is the first time I had to pay a cleaning fee in 12 years, and I always return cars in a similar state.
There was a little bit sand in the car, which is normal in a beach environment, but no special efforts were required to clean the car contrary to what I have been said. I was very careful, and I personally cleaned the car in the morning by removing most of the sand, dust and I even used a sponge for 10 minutes for cleaning purposes.
This was a very bad surprise, since this was in total contradiction with what the employee explained. In fact, he motivated me not to make any special cleaning just to be sure that he could make me pay 50 euros when returning the car.
I should not have trusted the information provided by this guy who said that presence of sand in the car was a normal thing.
In view of this, the employee committed a fault by failing to his obligation to describe the correct terms & conditions. There is a duty of information and good faith when entering into contract.
If a full cleaning was required, he should have informed me, and I would have been happy to perform it by myself or by paying 2 or 3 euros in a cleaning station (but not 50 euros!).
This cleaning fee was never mentioned when I hired the car. It even does not appear in the contract. The employee should have said that there was a cleaning fee rather than deliberately hiding this fact.
After that, I read forums and I have seen that this is not the first time that Auto Rent staff is doing the sand scam, just read the comment of 31 October 2017 on this forum below.
Now, I have to report a second incident.
I proposed to clean the car by myself to avoid the 50 € surcharge because this could have been done in less than 5 minutes. This proposition was refused by the manager of the agency, who wanted to make me pay the high cleaning fee immediately. He forbade me to clean the car.
I also wanted to take photos of the car state in view of a possible complaint. Surprisingly, the manager pushed me violently away from the car to prevent me from taking photos. This was painful. He forbade me to take photos to have evidence of the state of the car and to stay close to the car. He definitely closed it and was really threatening.
I even could not recover the rental contract that staid in the car and I was unable to perform a final check in the car to make sure that we haven’t forgotten things inside! I really feared for my own safety. This was a surrealist situation.
Well, it seems to me obvious that Auto Rent employees are not authorized to physically touch customers and to violent them.
The manager of the Faro agency committed a professional misconduct that should have been punished.
There was videosurveillance (CCTV) who recorded the aggression.
I made a complaint with the Auto Rent company. They refused everything I asked, and no discussion was possible. They even refused to watch the CCTV showing that I was physically brutalized by the manager of the Faro agency.

Having travelled abroad for over 30 years and hired cars without any hitch, this company caught us out. The VW Polo had extensive dints and scratches that were pointed out upon collection from their office at Faro Airport. Whilst I noted most of the defects, I was not as diligent as I should have been upon checking that all scratches had been accurately and correctly recorded. The holiday went without a hitch until we handed the car back, only to be charged over 100 euros for a defect that was present but not recorded on the paperwork. Whilst I have to accept my lack of due diliegence upon picking up the vehicle, I feel it important to draw this sharp practice that Auto Rent clearly operate and therefore warn you to avoid using them.

Be careful with your belongings! The renting went well (it was only 2 days really) but their staff haven’t got the honesty of returning any items left in the car. Before you return your car please make sure you take all your belongings with you!
When on route to return the car and whilst stopping at a red light, noticed my rectractable usb charger was still plugged in so had it unplugged, put it back to the pouch and kept it close to the gear box. Unfortunately when getting out of the car to get the luggage from the bag, forgot to take the charger with me. After the car has been checked by a staff member and while going to the office to close the contract, a young man took the car straight to cleaning.
I only realised I’ve left it in the car when I was at the airport. Called them straight away... OBVIOUSLY NOTHING HAS BEEN FOUND! Called again the day after and got the same response.
BE EXTRA CAREFUL! They will keep your belongings to themselves!!

Extremely rude arrogant guy called Rui.
When I picked up the car the guy was very nice, chatty and giving a sense of trust worthiness, we checked the car and it was scratched a lot on all sides. The car had 5/8 petrol which went down to 4/8s straight away so that around 60/70 KM, also I had the light for the tyre pressure all the time, when I checked at the garage, the tyres had 2.8, 2.4, 2.3 & 1.9 which is totally unacceptable. When I said this to the guy at the return he said I should have come back, all we have to do off course on holiday is turn around and come back!! He was then very arrogant and happy to say I had damaged the car, he said MAJOR DENT, it was on the passenger door and I was alone so I think I didn’t even open it. It was there but I didn’t see it as its insignificant. He was super rude and charge me 184€, I had my own excess insurance but I don’t like being cheated. I said so the other people who paid for all the other damage paid for nothing as the car was not fixed and my 184€ will not be used to fix the car either. He has 0 customer service and is the rudest person I have even met in a CS position and I have been renting in Faro airport 10 times a year for 2 years.
I hope this is the correct one for Auton rent Estrada do Airport Edif Auto Rent, Montenegro, Faro

Straight up scammers!! While reviewing the car for damage, the reviewer will deliberately mark the wrong place on the car for damage. When there are 15 marks on the car sheet, you won't notice that a spot was mis-marked. When you return the car, they will say "Aha, gotcha!" and then charge you for damage. They get a commission on the damage claims. SCAMMERS!! AVOID!!!

Check over the car with a extreme precision as they will try to sting you for anything. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.
We hired two cars as a group and both ended up with charges coming to over €450. Ours had some very minor scratches down the side. Definitely did not happen while I was driving. They were so fine that they maybe could have been there before. That would clearly be my fault if I missed them. However they were so fine they definitely could be polished out so charging €260 is a joke. He said it was probably leaves or bushes which I saw was an excuse given to another customer who complained so they seem well versed in charging customers for minor damage. That on its own maybe I would have just accepted but then we get onto the other car.
There was a very small finger tip sized flap on one tire that they claimed we caused. The driver again did not recall any situation that could have caused this. Then we are told they can only change tires in pairs which is utter rubbish. We get charged over €200 for 2 tires. Then on closer inspection, this “damage” has a glue like substance on it appearing like it has been repaired before. Their comments on this are that we didn’t say when about this damage when we picked up the car. Who check tires over for 1cm tiny marks?
The cars were covered in all sorts of scratches and chips so they clearly hardly ever (if ever) repair these. So all these absurd charges clearly get taken as profit. There was no sympathy from the staff or understanding of our point of view. If we caused this damaged I would not have any issue in paying. I drive all the time for work and have so far never scratched a car.
Just to be clear - NEVER USE THIS COMPANY

We hired a car from Autorent Faro from the 4th November to 11th. I have driven a lot abroad but was very wary of hiring a car this time because my most recent experience (with a different rental company) had been very bad and I am still fighting with them over unwarranted charges.
My experience this time was very different. Everyone we dealt with from the shuttle bus driver to the staff at the depot was great - efficient, friendly and helpful. The price we got the rental for was brilliant and there was no hassle at all to get me to buy extras such as excess insurance - even tho' their charge for this didn't seem anywhere near as high as some - I always buy my own annual cover which usually costs about the same as one week's insurance from rental companies!!
You DO have to lodge your credit card details with them but this is pretty standard practice. I've waited until now to write this cos I kept checking my bank to make sure nothing had gone out - once bitten twice shy as they say.
I would certainly recommend them going on my experience and we met a couple while picking up the car who have been using this company for 10 years and had nothing but praise for them

We were very disappointed with our recent car hire from Faro airport on the 21-28 October 2017. Upon returning the car on Saturday evening we were informed that the car would be subject to a cleaning charge of 25-50 euros due to a small amount of sand within the footwells and on the rear seat. As part villa owners we have been hiring a car from Autorent for the past 15 years and this has never happened before. People hiring a car from Faro will visit the beach on holiday and there will always be some sand within the vehicle especially if, like many of our customers, they have children. We were told that we could clean the car ourselves in a nearby facility but as it was 7.30pm on a dark Saturday evening this facility this was not practical. We offered to vacuum the car on the premise but this was refused.
We are of the opinion that this is a regrettably change in company policy, since it has not occurred previously and the amount of sand was the same as all previous years. The cleaning of some sand within a car in a beach location should be included in the rental charge. We have previously had a good experience from Autorent however this poor service means we will not be using the company for our future trips to the Algarve. Equally we will not be able to recommend Autorent to our friends and family visiting the Algarve going forward.

We have used autorent for 11 years now and about 5-6 times a year , and we have never had a problem with them , clean cars ,excellent service .The only time we have had to pay extra is when we filled up with diesel by mistake and consequently broke down on our last day , even then a breakdown truck was soon with us and the charges were very fair for the trouble we caused .

I was a little worried that the pickup of the car was outside the airport ... but I need not have worried
as we were promptly collected and brought a few minutes drive to pick up the car ... an up which was perfect for our needs and used very little fuel over our 900 km... staff were both pleasant and helpful ... and we did. Not have to wait our usual hour at the airport... 5 mins and we were off in the up to explore the algarve.... will use this firm again next year

You need to walk to car park P4 at Faro airport to catch the shuttle bus which was waiting there expecting me. A short 2-3 minute drive and we were at their premises. Like all the hire companies at Faro airport they will try and sell you a full insurance package. If you don't want to pay this then you will need a deposit pre-authorised on your credit card
to cover the insurance excess. This is released when the car is returned undamaged. Also if you want to use the motorway which is a toll road then you will need to hire a transponder as it is an electronic tag system. There is no way to pay with cash or card. You can avoid this charge by sticking to the National roads, it will depend how far you need to go. Also at Faro if you want to drive across the border into Spain you will need to pay a €40 visa fee (green card).
From the pick up bus to the return of the car the staff were efficient and friendly. The car was as specified and was a new high quality rental car as provided by major rental companies like Hertz etc.
There was no evidence of damage scams or unforeseen additional charges.
I would definitely rent from Auto Rent again.

Read a lot of reviews online and was apprehensive about hiring from Autorent but I saw bad reviews about all the other companies too.
So just let me give my experience with Autorent.
Got picked up promptly at airport, collected car at good price brought car back, and dropped back to the Airport all without a problem.
Now I must say check the car for dents and there will be no problem s.
I certainly would have no hesitation in booking with Autorent again
I found them very goog
