Appen offers a lot of opportunities for employers and employees. The website is simple and shows what they offer. It will be a lot better if they would include the Log-In/Sign-Up button on the website rather that having their client fill up a form and then wait for another time just to access the portal.

Where to begin... For starters there isn't much work available. Now when there is, they don't pay up and are dishonest.
I've done this recording gig, said to last around 1.5 hour and being paid 18usd (which seems somewhat fair). Turns out it took me 3.5 hours to accomplish (I fail to see how anyone could do it in less than 2.45mn, even knowing all the questions in advance). Then I waited for the pay to come in, I never got it. After being bounced around I finally found someone able to help me - or at least it seemed like it at the moment. I was told to wait, still no money. At some point I kept asking to be told that I used another person's ID to do it and therefore it cannot be counted and I will not be paid. It is simply impossible because I always opened the links they send personally and used my IDs they send me too. It just all look like a well rounded scam to me. Stay away.

I have worked for Appen for about one year. During that entire time, I have been on one project which is 5-7 hours a week that has been consistent and reliable, everything else has been disappointing.
On the bright side, the pay is fixed at an hourly rate and not too bad considering that you are doing easy low stress work from home.
The weak point is the communication. A few projects are good at this, but many are awful on consistency and setting expectations for workers.
I had one 20 hour a week project that started in May, a month later they temporarily pulled. One update was given two weeks later promising work by July, Over two months later near September, no communication since, leaving me without available work and unable to qualify for something else because it states that I am still working for that project.
I have also had a few emails in the past year stating that I qualify for certain projects only to see no option to apply for them and also invites to take 5-10 dollar surveys for money that have broken codes.
I like the overall concept and premise of what Appen offers, but this company could be so much better if they cleaned up their communication to workers.

Not a trustworthy workplace for Independent Contractors / Freelancers. Tried to pay me lass than agreed on and had to wait for part of my money for about 2 months. As a contractor you are just a number in their system, basically no communication on a human level. Unpaid qualification time of about 10-15 hours before even starting to work on anything. If you pass the qualification you are confronted with Excessive quality standards resulting in annoying and time consuming unpaid requalifications. Most of the time the requalification is not justified as they have no arguments on why you have to do it. They can let you do the requalification as many times they like, if according to them you underperformed even slightly. Ive worked for them for about 5 months and I already had enough. Worst company for independent contractors there is.

Customer service is slow. If you run into glitches, be prepared to wait 24-48 hours for a reply. Your privacy is not protected. I was interested in qualifying for a project. I immediately declined when it required for me to share my personal pictures and emails. I immediately deleted my account when I continued to experience technical issues on RaterLabs site. Waste of time!

I recently did an hours speech recording for Appen, which went fine. I received the payment, after an initial ( system) failure.
I knock off a star as I had to receive the payment via Paypal, and that company has stolen 8% of the value of the payment. So in the end I received £6.62 for an hours work, plus time dealing with the payment. Mostly Paypal's fault, but Appen must know that Paypal will take a cut and that the $9.50 will therefore be worth less than the UK legal minimum wage via Paypal at current exchange rates.
