Moving to a new place is stressful enough, not knowing providers of necessities. But when I saw AmeriGas on the empty propane tank, of course, I phoned them to come refill. They did, and promptly. The results?
They charged me almost 100$ for 28 gallons to fill. Then the real trouble started: the pilot on the water heater wouldn't stay lit. Every day I had to re-light. I called AmeriGas, they sent a delivery of another 6 gallons (to re-fill) and charged me almost 4$/gallon! Didn't bother checking the tank or connections. Didn't bother with much of anything except excuses and blame. ("You have to understand...") When I mentioned considering changing companies, the woman on the phone was exceptionally quick to inform me that by accepting the first re-fill I'd entered into a "contract" for a minimum of 3 years' service and that if I leave AmeriGas, I'd owe them 170$ and until that was paid, I'd be stuck with the tank AND remain under contract with them!
Shopping around, I found a different company. A new tank, 50 gallons of propane, incredibly prompt and professional service, they even checked the lines and water heater BEFORE coming with the new tank. Cost? HALF of what AmeriGas charged AND a new tank, 20 gallons MORE gas AND they inspected the oil tank for my heating oil!
Further research with local AmeriGas customers: AmeriGas has charged some of them upwards of close to 6$/gallon propane, they've charge the 170$ "contract cancellation" and given "credit" for remaining gas at $1.90/gallon (even after the customer paid $5.99/gallon), AmeriGas is quick to threaten litigation when customers try to leave and get service else-where, AND, if a customer is on "Auto-delivery" and for any reason needs to have a delivery off the schedule, AmeriGas will charge the "Will Call" rate PLUS more for what they will admittedly refer to as the "inconvenience".

When selling me an account, they quoted a delivered price of $1.95/gal. Once the tank was in place, including the $250 fee for ending our relationship and picking up the tank, the price went up to $3.45/gal. During this time, the delivered cost for residential propane remained constant at around $2.20/gal. (per US EIA). this is the most blatant Bate and switch I have seen. When I asked my local distributor, I was told "pricing comes from corporate". So stay away from this company.
