Got a bid for approximately $10,000 worth the patio extension and two sidewalks around the house. Satisified with bid and the work outlined in the written bid, yet contractor on the first day was too busy to be with his crew, said he was busy with meetings. The crew did not know specifics, knocked on my door, and asked me questions; the then-owner calls me and complains that I am "talking" to his crew. This is my fifth house, my father built homes for nearly 50 years, and I sledgehammered out a bunch of concrete working my way through college. For $10K, I was getting a bed of gravel (see picture) surrounded by 3-4 inches of concrete on each side. Basically, a sidewalk on top of a gravel bed. Won't last, have to pier this down to the frost line with a patio this large. 7 plus piers were in the bid, yet the crew did not know what I was talking about. The crew was building forms for steps with a 6-inch run and rise when the bid stated a three-foot run and short rises with a minimum of three to four steps. Then the owner says if I (the customer) talk to his crew again, he will pull them. A threat? What? For $10K. I said, go ahead and pull them; I will not manage your crew if you are too busy not to be here. Good riddance. Check out the owner's legal background and hist; it tells a story.
