I've been a customer for years, but the first return I've made - due to a fault - and they just don't want to know.
I bought a few things, plus a scarf - yellow with grey tassels, in May 2020. I've just started wearing it, so gave it a first wash last week - cold handwash, with a dress and another scarf I've owned for years and washed many many times.
I left to soak for 10 minutes and found the colour had run so badly in the scarf that the water was a thick dark yellow, (almost greenish tint due to the darker tassels) - I rinsed the lot immediately and put the dress in another wash, and hung the scarf to dry over the bath.
Consequently, the dress I washed with the scarf was completely ruined - and no amount of vanish has got the yellow/green stains out.
I contacted toast and sent photos, only to be told they would test my "perceived colour run" and their "on site quality lab" would get back to me. They did and said my other scarf - which is dark blue, and over 10 years old - had caused the yellow/green colour run.
I was gobsmacked. I've spent £1000s with this company, and they're willing to call me a liar over a £59 scarf?
I should have washed the scarf separately as it was new, but I've never seen dye run like it. Consequently the scarf was patchy in areas and with dark areas from the tassels - including the Toast label which you could no longer read.
Toast finally agreed to accept the return and sent a DPD driver to collect it. Unfortunately I've now got to wait 10 working days for them to get to my parcel. And then what? I have no confidence with Toast.
It is really upsetting to be called a liar when you have faulty goods and damaged clothes.
I won't be buying from them again, it's just not worth it. I also bought a "neat" cardigan recently and the quality has definitely dropped - it was so thin you could fish with it.
I know it's just a scarf, but this is just one more thing to chase up and sort out.
EDIT: As you can see Toast replied below to say what great customer experience they want to offer, so after this I got in touch again to find out what was going on with my return. They offered me 15% discount on anything full priced and refunded my scarf. They still claim the scarf wasn't faulty, so I must have imagined the whole thing... !

Toast Harrogate - do they need customers?
Went into this shop this afternoon - was totally ignored by the shop assistant - who was busy taking some sort of phone survey - has another part time job as a waitress! Couldn’t even manage to acknowledge us when we said goodbye as we left - she obviously doesn’t think that customers contribute towards her wages!

I’m not sure I’ve ever taken it upon myself to write an unprompted review before but when googling something else entirely I came across Toast’s profile here and felt so very sad to see the recent bad reviews.
I have been a Toast customer for more than 15 years and I still have one or two if my original purchases. I’ve seen small changes in style and quality as the years have gone by and the company has undergone various leadership and ownership changes.
Right now, I’m happy to say that they are really riding a wave. Quality of fabrics and classic, quirky Toast styling, alongside excellent customer service, and additional bonuses of the thoughtful and beautiful magazine. It’s always a thrill to receive a new catalogue and I’ve been impressed to see their commitment to modern issues of environment and inclusion.
I’m very sad to see so many people reporting bad experiences. I have never had an issue with returns, they make it very simple and service has remained very high even during this incredibly challenging time.
I will continue to grow old(er) with Toast - elegantly, comfortably dressed and always with pockets.

Have been a loyal Toast customer (when I can afford it!) since its inception. I love their clothes, styling, materials and their ethos. I would love a petite range as at 5’3” i am often swamped and have paid out a lot in tailoring alterations..I also love their bedding and have several pieces from individual potters as part of their giving new talent opportunities. Have never been disappointed just frustrated that I’m not above 5’8”!

I have been buying Toast clothing since the company started in 1997 and throughout that time I've not experienced the negative issues that have been reported in some of the reviews below. Whenever I've needed to contact customer services, they've always been so incredibly helpful and polite. Yes, the clothes can sometimes be a bit pricey, however, they generally wash well, look great and last. Materials are of a high quality and a lot of work goes into creating their designs and sourcing fine materials and prints. If there is a problem with a purchase, Toast have always been eager to resolve it. Out of all the clothing brands that I've bought from over the years, I would have to place Toast as no.1 for continuous good service and quality products.

This is my 2nd review on Toast,my last in 2019,and again can't quite believe what I'm reading,all these negative reviews on such a brilliant company.
I shop all the time with Toast,several orders every month and also instore on occasion and have never experienced anything other than first class service.
Today I placed an order after 2pm and got notification of delivery tomorrow,(how fast is that and at no extra cost)
Just before lockdown I returned an item to the Richmond store, the parcel could not be delivered as the store had to close due to government restrictions, Toast refunded my money immediately with out question.
The warehouse is operating with greatly reduced staff yet still manage to dispatch my orders extremely fast and any returns have been refunded straight away.
My only suggestion to improve would be the packaging, since changing to shipping in paper bags the garments arrive crumpled so not ideal when purchasing expensive items.
In all a great company,wearable clothes and 100% trustworthy.

I ordered something 5/10 and have yet to receive it. When I track it it claims it hasn’t even left their country yet! I get we are in a pandemic, but I got keychains custom made From the UK and they were at my house in 2 weeks. THIS COMPAMY IS A SCAM!

I love Toast I do but returns are becoming a real issue. I spent over £125 as I have done on numerous occasions but because some were sale items I haven't got a returns label. Surely at a time when we are being encouraged to shop, Toast should be making it easier and cheaper to return when necessary. Your shops are currently closed making it even more difficult. I was advised that I would still need to pay for the return even if I wanted an exchange, that seems extraordinary.

Unlikely to order again as getting a prepaid returns label seems to be absolutely random. Ordered two parcels a couple of weeks ago had to pay to return them (even though I paid for shipping as well, one of which should have had free shipping for spending over £125 which I didn’t get, even though this was advertised) ordered again and this time I have a prepaid label for returns.
This is a real issue as over the last few years Toast’s sizing now seems to vary hugely from piece to piece, even taking into account different styles. Shop in store if you really have to, then at least you can return without all the issues and can see the sizing. Such a pity as a few years ago Toast was my go to clothing brand.

One star for quick response. One star for standard customer service.
NO star for quality. Especially for the price one pays. It came in faulty. Also develops a little hole after two times of wear.
NO star for customer oriented service. The product quality is not the priory concern of Toast team although they look like they do. Customer service team replies fast but in a standard robotic mannerism by repeating rule is rule.
NO star for satisfactory. Will not buy again just for overpriced superficial look of style that does not match any good quality control. My advise is looking for other independent garment markers that makes pieces to last.
Anyone who receives the products and hold any doubts, the advise is do not hesitate to return otherwise nothing is guaranteed afterwards. Toast is NOT customer oriented and NOT quality focused.
Do not buy just for the style.

What has happened to their customer service?
After ordering a pair of very expensive pyjamas I received a refund by PayPal. Toast didn't bother to inform me until I wrote to them and received a generic cut and paste reply. They state they value their customers. I don't think so.
I've had a few orders cancelled over the last few years. Maybe time to sort your stock issues out and answer questions rather than putting a generic apology.

Very expensive pleated skirt (£110) arrived crumpled in a paper bag. (Jigsaw and Hobbs clothes come in boxes with tissue paper.)
For that price, don’t think I should have to press the item before wearing and as previous reviews have pointed out-Toast doesn’t give prepaid returns postage.
A costly mistake which I won’t be repeating!

Placed order as promised free delivery and returns On the website . No free returns label In the parcel and had to pay postage to return one item.
I am also baffled as to how the same items on John Lewis website are reduced but Toast are still charging full price. I called customer services and was told that they don’t price match! Again baffled as to how Toast clothing is cheaper everywhere else.... decided to shop elsewhere as clothes are overpriced and to be honest not that great.
Toast really need to get their act together if they have any chance of survival in the current economic climate against a backdrop of fierce competition and much better customer service offered by their competitors.

Love toast clothes but customer service has been pretty poor experience so far. Bought 2 items recently online and need to return 1 of these items but found there was no prepaid label for this return. Spoke to their online chat and was told that there are no free returns during a sale period However after explaining that both items purchased were not in the sale and therefore was entitled to a free returns label I was told I would be emailed a prepaid label.
No label was forthcoming so I emailed them and explained the situation. Over 24 hours later still no response so I guess I will have to pay the postage in order to return this item despite the banner on their website stating free returns for items over £125!!!!

My experience with Toast since the lock down has been chaotic. Everything has gone wrong. Now, however, my order has been returned to them as it was delivered to my old address - so I never actually received it! But can I get them to respond to my emails explaining that I no longer want the order but I do want a refund - no! The only reply that I've had said they will send it out again!!
Clearly avoid online shopping with Toast like the plague - wait until the shops open again. And the way I feel at the moment, I'll be giving them a wide berth even then.

I'd say Toast is on a high. Been a long time fan but reckon design has freshened up a bit in the last year or two - moved away from dowdy.
It's my go-to and I really hope it survives this crisis. Had some issues with delivery but that's understandable currently.

Very disappointed with the customer care; after years of being a happy customer when Toast was my favourite shop,I’m very disillusioned.
I wanted confirmation that I could return a store purchased item that was completely unfit for purpose.
We are now in lockdown and stores are closed , but it’s beyond their capability to accept a return by post .
I mean , why is that so hard ????
They refuse to commit to an exchange or credit note when stores reopen, which I find staggering .
Such a difference to those times when it was family owned .

I do not recommend using this company to buy a gift for someone. Despite having both the item and the online receipt, making an exchange was lengthy, complex and frustrating. Due to the item I asked for in exchange eventually being out of stock I was left with no communication and no gift!

I have shopped in Toast for years and spent a fortune. I have paid extra for the clothing as it's been of excellent quality and for what your getting well worth the cost. What I have noticed over the past few years is the prices jumping and quality and styles not as good.
I wish the original owners and founders had not sold up.

Have spent a small fortune on toast clothing and most of it I can’t wear for various reasons, shrinkage, buttons fall off, terrible fading after one wash, cashmere jumpers all have holes, zips don’t work properly, terrible bobbling, hems have fallen down.....I could go on and on In fact I don’t own a single item from toast that doesn’t have a fault with it. I’ve been stupid and forgiving enough in the past to stick with them because I love the styles but no more!!! I will never buy another Toast item again
