Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Remake
Mitchell Booth, 30 May 2025
Disney's 2025 live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch is currently on release in cinemas around the world. However, while some die hard fans are praising it, other reviewers are disappointed by a watered down version of the 2002 original.
According to
Rotten Tomatoes , audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with a 94% rating and similarly an "A" grade from CinemaScore and the numbers are stacking up with already a record-breaking $183 million domestic opening over Memorial Day weekend in the U.S.
In contrast to these results, some consider the storyline to be far too removed from the original concept, creating a disappointing and distinct disparage.
Rachel Rasker from the ABC, reports the original movie highlighted elements of Hawaiian culture, showcasing local people as central figures instead of treating the islands as merely tropical scenic holiday destinations. It also touched on how excessive tourism impacted native Hawaiian communities, a theme that the remake had the opportunity to build on, but chose not to.
Cast and Performances
Despite some mixed reviews about the story, performances have been praised for capturing the essence of the original characters while bringing new dimensions to their roles .For some, a positive was the introduction of fresh talent backed by seasoned actors including:
- Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai
- Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai
- Chris Sanders reprising his role as the voice of Stitch
- Zach Galifianakis as Jumba
- Billy Magnussen as Pleakley
- Hannah Waddingham as the Grand Councilwoman
- Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa
